What is correct "gratinated" or cooked "au gratin"?

I am a little bit confused. When I check my online dictonary German - English for the word Gratinieren it shows - cooked "au gratin". But I thought it is "gratinated".

Is "gratinated" American English?

What is correct: Gratinated potatoes or potatoes cooked "au gratin"?

Would appreciate your answers and some explanations and sorry for my English.

'potatoes cooked au gratin' is the correct term.
Gratinated appears to be english slang.
