What's the going rate for having a webdesigner build your business website?

Tons of web host offer turn-key web presence solutions you can do yourself. Yahoo is one of them. Basically you just answer questions in a web form and it auto-generates you a web site. You can of course customize the template. Most even have a web app to build a product catalog, upload photos of the items, and tie the whole thing an eCommerce system.

You'd be better off finding a professional graphic artist to create banners and logos for you to add to the template.

The current rate for web design (and development) can be anywhere from $300 to $3000. If I was going to build your site, I would charge $600-$800, with an AJAX shopping cart and an overall web 2.0 experience, all developed in PHP.

It depends on how "professional" you want your site to be, and how many pages you need. If you are not a professional designer then I would not recommend you do it yourself. If you mean real business, hire a professional.
