my son is off to Iraq and has left me two Suzuki motorcycles, about 500cc or so, to keep running. I dont ride. How can I keep them in riding condition for a year?

I'm gonna agree with Kevi on this one. You could do it yourself, but if you have it done professionally, it will be easier for you, and done right. Prayers for your boy.

Don't start them once in awhile. If the engine does not get up to "operating" temperature it will form condensation in the motor and that will be far worse long-term effects. When you do go to start the bike after it has nor been running, make sure the kill switch is on. You DO NOT want the motor to fire up right away. You DO want the cylinders to move around a bit, get the oil lubricating throughout the motor. Get it set up for storage from a reputable shop, if you are not sure of all the steps.

Kevi has the right approach. Since you aren't familiar with bikes it would be easier for you and probably better for the bikes, in the long run, if a mechanic winterized them for a long storage period. My hopes and prayers are for your son to return home safe. God bless you and your family.

take them to a competent motorcycle mechanic and have them - what we call winterized - set up for long term storage - engine fogged etc.
