Pity then that Yahoo, by its very interface, ENCOURAGES people on lists to contact each other, and invite each other to new lists, etc, then!

Since they haven't quoted chapter and verse (and don't seem to be able to, or they would already have done so in order to make such a controversial claim) of EXACTLY what part of the Yahoo TOS this (have the right to contact members off list) is supposed to contravene, and I have not been able to find any basis for this claim, and no clear precise answer has yet been forthcoming from Yahoo itself (and I also note that no one else before me has been able to provide any other answer for you!), I suspect (just in my personal opinion!) from personal past bitter experience that the sort of people making this claim should not be trusted to get behind you. Seems just like a bunch of potentially dangerous childish control freak Cyber Bullies. The problem is that Yahoo is trying to claim the status of a "Common Carrier", which it appears from the various opinions I have been able to gather, under Aussie Law that they may not have, and just pretends to act as if it does, so just ignores any approach from people who expose such problems.

If you complain to Yahoo, or indeed the ISP of anyone who acts in contravention of Australia Law to stalk you, bully you, defame you, or other wise behave in an unacceptable manner, and they refuse to act, under Aussie Law, an inaction IS an act, and they may be, in the various opinions I have obtained, deemed to be a co-conspirator in such actions in contravention of the Law against you. Such may also doubtless apply (taking into account the relevant provisions under 'vicarious responsibility') to any moderators of such Yahoo Groups, and even more so, to the Listowners, especially if they have been contacted for assistance, and have not assisted the complainant.

In my opinion, from my experience, you may be better off staying well away from such potentially unstable Groups of People. You are only likely to continue to be the target of their nastiness, as they will use you as a scapegoat for their own problems. From my personal experience, gatherings of people who behave in such ways, are eventually likely to self destruct, and you will be better off not being around, so you can't get blamed.
