Why do people answer questions about language, when they don't know the language in question?

I do only answer to questions, when I think the answer could be useul to the person.

I'm not a native speaker of English, so I don't translate into English.

Update:

No I won't tranlate into English. I'm a translator of the pair German <-> Italian, so it makes me mad to see grammar mistakes in that languages.

Of course you can answer questions in general, but you shouldn't answer to translation requests into a language that you don't/hardly speak.

Because people think that using babelfish or another on-line translator is the same as knowing a language. They are sadly mistaken.

Smart.. I guess the answer would be that people want to earn points? Sad but true..

But anyway, your Enlgish is good enough to translate something into "raw" English from your native language. Actually, you could probably make a great translation, judging from the style and spelling of your question.

I do it for practice (German) and because I know my French is better than babelfish's, and although it's not as good as a native speaker's, in some cases I understand the English better than native French speakers do, so my translation is closer. Also practice, for French, a bit.

Well it doesn't always require the knowledge of a particular language to answer any question on it. You can know a few facts regarding a language and answer the question if your kfits there in. As simple as pie.

My native language is also not English and it doesn't pertain to it in any way as well. My mother tongue is bengali which is spoken in the state of west bengal in India.
