Literal means "adhering to fact or to the ordinary construction or primary meaning of a term or expression : ACTUAL (free from exaggeration or embellishment)"
while
Realistic means "concern for fact or reality and rejection of the impractical and visionary."
Both concern respect for facts, but 'literal' deals more with expressing facts whereas 'realistic' is more of a mind set, a chosen perspective. 'Literal' expresses factual information without exaggeration or embellishment while 'realistic' is a state of being most concerned with reality and facts. Thus, a realistic person would most likely be quite literal in his writings.

no, they are not. i dont really know how to explain them, so i will use examples:
It is not realistic to think that he will call. (it is not likely he will call, so for you to think he will is silly)
He literally stank like a garbage bin (he actually stank like a garbage bin - they werent just saying that because he smelt bad)
