Ami is the French phrase for friend. The French called the Americans amis after their liberation by American and English troops in WWII. The German took over the phrase later. It is not supposed to be an insult.

I wouldn't compare ami to kraut. Ami is a nice short way to say amerikaner and no one means anything by it, I say it too and I'm american. Kraut is just really dumb and offensive. I would never call a German person that.
