What do you think about Germans?

I have met a few nice German people and I have met a few that barely hid their disdain for me. So, I think there are some among you who are hidden racists, but I wouldn't generalize my limited knowledge on an entire people.

But I have always wondered about the German people. You (along with everybody else) are taught that holocaust was bad. But, are you taught how it came to be? What was the psychological and sociological background that made it happen? Because, although the period has become a taboo, not to be discussed, I am very afraid that the background feelings still live on in some of you.

Last summer my wife and I went camping in Europe and spent quite some time in Germany. We started in the north, went to Möln, Lübek, Insul Rügen, Berlin, Dresden, the Erzgebirge and Seiffen, among other places. We were in no hurry, as we had five months on the road. We loved Germany and the People we met there. I can´t speak German for beans but that didn´t matter. Everybody helped us when we needed it, and we had some very interesting times. I can´t say enough good things about the Germans.

Here's my observations. Germans are taught to be correct, not polite. However, they are pragmatic and this should not be confused with having an unpleasant disposition. Germany is a great country with wonderful food, beer, landscape, and in the south the folks are less uptight than in Berlin, and other cities.

I think German's are good people, well except for the neo nazi's. I think that people still have a hard time seperating German's from Nazi's. My Great-grandfather came over to the US in the 1880's from Germany and I would love to go visit it. Plus they have some crazy european sex there!!!

No problem, I think you take your work a little to serious, and you could be a little more fun. German families are great.

I know WWII was well over 60 yrs ago, but I can't get that image of Hitler and nazi's out of my mind. So when I think of Germans I think of racist, elitist, warmongering savages.

Now I realize these are all stereotypes, and for the most part untrue. But German History has been tainted for ever in my opinion. Especially in the 20th century.

Nothing, just normal european people. They may behave differently but its not their fault, its their culture and it should be respected and accepted.

All cultures have bad qualities. Its all a matter of staying away from bad people.

other than that i dont know and wont assume. every induvidual is diffrent.

no opinions now really.... of course if you say "german" the first thing that comes into my head is "nazi" but then i just ignore that --- cant help my implicit associations unfortunately. i have seen too many holocasut movies.
