How can we have a baby, my wife being HIV positive?

With a cesarean the risk of the child being positive, too, is minimized. But how can she become pregnant? Is it safe for me to make a little hole in the preservative, so that my sperm can enter into her vagina, or would thatbe too risky?

Update:

A surrogate mother is out of question for us, and I'm not very keen on artificial insemination. Nevertheless thanks to all who thought in these directions.

Peanut509 is correct that mother and baby do not share the same blood supply in utero, but the maternal blood supply IS still connected to the fetal blood supply via the umbilical cord and placenta. It is possible for HIV to pass from the mother to the baby through the placenta, thereby infecting the baby. But the chances of HIV transmission are far greater during a vaginal birth and through breastfeeding.

If an HIV positve mother received treatment prior to becoming pregnant and received treatment during her pregnancy to reduce the maternal viral load and also during labor and delivery, then the risk of transmission can be reduced. Electing to have a cesearean will also reduce the risk of the baby being infected, so that the baby is not exposed to HIV infected blood or vaginal/cervical secretions. But the baby would also have to receive antiretroviral treatment for several weeks after birth. Bottle-feeding the baby instead of breastfeeding is yet another way to reduce the risk of HIV transmission.

While there are certain measures and precautions that can be taken to reduce the chances of HIV transmission to the baby, these measures are by no means 100% effective in preventing the baby from being infected. It would be best if you both consulted a doctor before trying to conceive, so that you know what kind of options and treatments are available. Best of luck to you both!

Maternal and fetal blood are kept separate in utero. The danger of passing HIV to the baby happens when the child passes through the birth canal. She can still carry her own baby, but she would have to have a C-section so the virus won't be passed to the baby during a vaginal delivery. It is also very important that she does not breast feed because the virus is found in breast milk as well.

Artificial insemination. But you still put your child at risk. You may have to look into adoption.

    She can become pregnant invitro.

They would take your sperm and her egg and let them do their thing in a little dish....implant the embryo into her body and hopefully it'll survive.

However like everybody here is saying....adoption might be the best way to go.

if she is HIV pos it is likely the child would be born HIV pos. You wouldnt want your child born to suffer would you? The baby would be subjected to many many many tests after birth. Thats not fair to the baby b/c You and She want one. Thats kinda selfish.

Got an answer for you tho..Adopt or get a seregant mother..

Probably artificial insemination is the safest.

Don't get information here, talk to her doctor.

I would seriously consider adoption.....or a surragate.......the chances of your child or yourself becoming HIV positive are too great to take a chance with.....

I would be too scared of my child getting HIV. I would adopt.

With adequate treatment, she could have an HIV negative baby.

    best option

    adopt an orphan

dont kill baby before coming to world

but adopt one to give life when he is dying without parenthood
