I need a cheap flight from VA to Frankfurt Germany....?

Which airport--Richmond, Norfolk, Roanoke, Newport News, Lynchburg, Bristol, Charlottesville, Shenandoah Valley, or Dulles?

Lufthansa has a nice $406 roundtrip from Dulles right now. This includes all taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges, and is a nonstop flight each way.

Ok, so for Richmond, Northwest has an incredible $409 fare, however the travel time is 12h 40m there and 16h 20m back; connects at DTW.

The shortest possible connections RIC-FRA are 10h 0m there and 10h 48m back, this with United to Dulles, then to Frankfurt and back the same way. This fare is $779. Another connection is only 10 minutes longer outbound and comes in at $695. However, with these very tight connections, if you get there too late, the airline has little choice other than put you on the next flight (the next night!).

I have flown Northwest across the Atlantic at least a dozen times in the past 10 years. Their new fleet of big Airbus 330s is slightly above average as far as comfort, and connecting at Detroit is easy--it's a new very modern airport.

So I guess it comes down to either adding 2.5 hours in a car or bus to and from Dulles airport, or adding the extra flight hours if you go Northwest from RIC. To me, it wouldn't be worth it to pay almost $300 more just to save a few hours; I'd rather spend $30 of the savings at a nice sit-down restaurant at Detroit airport during the layover, and keep the difference... but that's just me.
