There may be no help for it but...?
I have recently aquired an old trunk. Its big enough to fit 2 people into, thats not why I got it but anywho, its so old that the leather and material that it is made out of is cracking and isnt soft to the touch. I like the look of the trunk so thats not the factor but the smell inside this thing is so bad it could gag a maggot.
How can I "clean" off and out the trunk without further damaging it? Also, is there a sealer that I can spray and or paint on it to put a protective layer so the rustic look doesnt get worse?

normally I would say to clean with saddle soap...good scrubbing..
then mink oil the hell out of it...
however if it's so dry already you want to get some oil on it first
wait a week apply again then maybe once more two weeks apart each time...once you got that done twice a year will keep it looking nice...
the saddle soap would clean off some stains and grime. but you need to get in there and scrub with a kind of stiff brush. but don't do that if you think you'll come away with chunks!
anyway it you thinks it worth the risk saddle soap will help with the smell. and if it's colored shoe Polish will bring that back with a little elbow grease

Moth balls would cover up the odor. For the leather you want something that will penetrate and hopefully soften it. Linseed oil rubbed on it would give it a natural look and original.

.
Measure the bottom of your trunk....from the measurement, go to a lumber yard, Home Depot or anywhere they sell lumber.
Have them cut 1x4's ceder.....Place them in the bottom of the trunk...
If you can stand it, Scour the trunk with a good disinfectant.
The ceder will last a lifetime and there isn't a better smell than ceder

NEATSFOOT OIL, SNOW SEAL ( ACADEMY STORES) FOR LEATHER, DEPENDS ON WHATS CAUSING THE SMELL AS TO WHAT TO DO!
