It's about alienation. The main character ends up killing a man and his defence in court is 'The sun got in my eyes'. This really exemplifies the outsider problem, that the outsider doesn't feel connected to his own self, to his own actions. One interpretation of the book is that in the absence or religion, the contemporary world is incapable of giving individuals a sense of values.

Historically, Camus is included in the existentialist movement (at least in that period), founded by Jean-Paul Sartre. In that perspective, man must define himself in order to live a relationship with the world. In the Outsider, the absence of such a relationship is the consequence of the protagonist's failure to establish such a rapport.

As for what you're asking specifically, about the narrative, it's been a while since I've read it and I'm going off the top of my head, but look at the simplicity of the language. The sentences are brief, and absent of subjectivity or adjectives. It helps paint this mood of a grey and empty world. There is very little in terms of an emotional appraisal of anything. That's one path of enquiry you might want to look into.

However, you must read the book. If you're going to bother getting an education, do the work. It might seem easier to just get by without it, but you'll regret it later. The diploma means nothing without the knowledge and discipline you acquire getting it.

P.S. the Oustider and the Stranger are the same book. They're just different translations of the French "L'Étranger"

Yes, please ignore the three responses above, they know nothing. I have lived in foreign countries for most of my life, and this book is a treasure trove of wisdom. There have been so many times in my life that I have felt like this, that if I had a gun in my hand I could have killed someone. This is a social dysfunction know as dehumanisation, and comes from being treated as an outsider, and not shown the compassion that would normally have been shown to someone of the same blood. It is a great book. And I mean great as in classic. A book that should be not only read, but taught, to all people, especially Americans, who think they are soooo special, and so different, and so God almighty gracious when they are not.

The links below will give you info on The Stranger and The Outsider. They are part of study packs, but you can get quite a lot of info from the free excerpts. Whether or not it will be enough to enable you to write essays is another matter!!

You don't even know the name of the book and can't "get around to" reading it, but you're going to write an essay on it? Oh, yeah, you are definitely headed for a glorious future. Bon chance, mon ami.

Yes, for my junior site I am doing the book "The Outsiders". You can find more information on the book at www.sehinton.com. The outsiders is about a group of young boys who are called the greasers who have a gang rival, the socs. The narrator is Ponyboy. Its got hatred, laughter, sadness and a whole other mixture of emotions in it.
