Why are the crimes alleged in Haditha called a massacre and the killings in Indianapolis are not?

I listen to several stories of "alleged massacre's" in Iraq, yet when a family is gunned downed by an assailant, its not called that ? The definition of massacre is the act or an instance of killing a number of usually helpless or unresisting human beings under circumstances of atrocity or cruelty. If killing 7 family members execution style isn't a massacre, then I don't know what is. If the accused military members are guilty of what they say, then that would be a massacre too. The difference is that things that happened in Iraq have not yet been proven, and yet the killings in Indianapolis were quite obvious.

Does the biased media have anything to do with it ?

Update:

You guys need to read the definition of massacre from Websters....The definition of massacre is the act or an instance of killing a number of usually helpless or unresisting human beings under circumstances of atrocity or cruelty.

Remember in your history classes whenever the Native Americans fought the US Army and destroyed them in combat ;ie:" Custer's last stand" it was considered a massacre but when the US Army did like wise, it was considered a great battle.

What happened in Haditha in which a handful of US Marines stressed out by extremely savage combat and IED attacks lost control and allegedly "massacred" unarmed civilians is what you would call a massacre. They committed a crime and if charged under the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) it would be jail time or possibly the death penalty.

What took place in Indianapolis in which 7 family members were

brutally "snuffed out' is a crime. When it comes to the military, most media personnel are utterly biased and they love marrying the word massacre and Soldiers or Marines together without ever finding out what truly happened let alone wear our shoes.

Yes, both are massacresa nd both are truly horrendous crimes.

A massacre occurs when a bunch of people kill a bunch of people. When just one person kills a bunch of people it is not called a massacre. It is simply a mass murder. When a bunch of people kill just one person, it is called an execution. When one eprson kills one person, it is a murder or manslaughter. so it is really the numbers involved that determine the adjectives.
