Should I take my cats with me on an overseas move?

I am going to move from Germany to the US in about a year. Should I take my cats with me when I move or would that be too much stress for them? Would it seem like I don't love them if I leave them in the care of a friend or coworker that I have known for several years?

no you should take them with you, you will need to get a pet passport, your vet can arrange all this for you.

they will need to be fully vaccinated, microchipped, rabies vacc (in in some countries), flea treatment 48hrs before they fly out.

you will need to arrange crates for them but iam sure your airline will adv you on the correct size you will need for them, they are not allowed to be sedated for travelling but iam sure they will be fine.

i work in a vets and many people have travelled and said they were all right.

There r many unanswered questions here, making it difficult for an informed response...

How many cats? How old are they? How long have you had them? How attached are U? Will U be living where pets are allowed? Have you considered they, most likely, will be quarantined for sometime, when entering the US? Do the cats know the friend or co-worker? If left behind, will they stay together?

All these aspects should play a part in your decision...

It might be a good idea to get an opinion from your Veterinarian.

It depends on how long you will be gone. I was looking in to having my cat come with me on my overseas teaching job, but I decided I wouldn't be here long enough. Because she would have to go into quarantine for an extensive period of time both coming and going.

If you will be in America for several years/permanently, then yes. If it's just short term (schooling, etc), I might ask someone whom the cats are already familiar with to sit for you. Either way, start looking into moving costs early, you will either need to get them marked as special underneath "luggage" or some lines will let you keep them as "carry-on" but there is limited space on each flight for pets.

Yes you can take her over but she'll have to spend quite a while at the vets having jabs and things to make sure she doesn't get any diseases.

But when i was younger me and my family moved to Spain (not in Spain anymore) and we left our cat in England with my mums friend.

Its not a nice thing to put your cat through.

I have kept a kitten at my veterinary surgery for 3 and a half years doing jabs and checkups because the kittens owner moved from Australia to Somerset where i live.

So i think your cats would be better off with a good friend you can just.

    Hope this helps.

Take your cats with you. Either way, they're going to be moving house. I don't know what the actual quarentine regs are in the states; but you can visit them in quarentine, and they give them good care. Either way, it's clear you love them, or your wouldn't have taken the time to ask. So figure out which works best for you; but in my veiw, either way, they're going to have the stress of moving, I feel it'd be better for them to move with a person they know so not everythign is strange.

But really, whatever works for you.

Well, in my opinion I would take them. It may be a little distressing for them, but once you get to your new home they should be happy with you and their new surroundings. Animals are JUST LIKE your family. Plus, cats are cute! :) I hope you have a safe trip to Germany! GOOD LUCK!

Bring them with you. Talk to a vet on how to keep the stress to a minimum.

    Pls take them with you.....

    Love conquers all barriers...

specially if you are going for long term or good, they will need you....

They might just keep wondering why you left them all the time you were gone.....

a year is too long to leave a cat home. so you should travel with her.
