why are some people so stupid to think that a billion is 1000000000?

Some english-speaking people think that a billion is 1000000000 although everybody (like german speaking people do) should know that a Billion is 1000000000000?

Update:

====ad:=====

ok, i feel sorry for this a little bit trollic question. yes, i really can turn mad by such facts, but I dont know why not Aluminuim should do this. i didn't really wanted to find the answer, because i had found it at the wikipedia before. i was only that angry about this fact that i had to let my anger out. i don't really feel anger about this fact, i feel anger about all these disstandartising actions of peoples, for example inventing new alphabeths, inventing new languages, inventing new number systems, inventing things like iregular verbs, etc.

    In some countries a billion is (english speaking countries) = 1,000,000,000.-

    In other countries a billion is (as you say in Germany, France, in all spanish talking countries and others) = 1,000,000,000,000.-

    Both are correct because is just a way of how they named that number but of course we have to be very careful and see if the person is english speaker or not.

    ---Addition---

    Another difference, in some countries they write 1.000.000.- , or 3,141592 and in other countries they write 1,000,000 and 3.141592

    I could ask the same question of you. Why do many people think that the a billion is 10 times 100 thousand million (i.e. 10^12), when everyone should know it's 10 times 100 million (i.e. 10^9)? We out number you, you know. And when expression numbers 10,000 and higher, it's a good idea to use commas.

    It IS a billion to most of the English-speaking world. We use the "short scale" while most of Europe uses the "long scale." Learn something before you start calling people stupid. The links below explain the difference.

    1,000,000,000 Billion

    1,000,000,000,000 Trillian

    Quelle(n): dictionary.com (as long as you aren't British). American English uses 10^9 for Billion.
