Does anyone watch the Benediction and Devotions on EWTN?

I love the prayers, readings and sermon, but it is the musical chant-like benedictions that just melt my soul. I feel such immense peace whenever I listen. If you are depressed, anxious, tired of life, afflicted with sorrow, marred with tragedies and worn out; listen to these magical sounds.

I am a devout Catholic.

Last night, members of my family all got together for dinner and a night of relaxation. I was discussing religion with my 18 year old nephew. Raised Catholic, he has gradually ventured away from the Faith.

Though he has yet to completely abandon it, he has become quite lapsed. When I asked him why he was drifting away from Catholicism, he said one of the things was the Devil. "It sounds so medieval to me, and I can't accept the true existence of something like the Devil and Hell. Every time I think of it, it doesn't sound like fact but ancient myth."

I don't doubt the existence of the Devil. How can I accurately explain to my nephew that the Devil really exists and that the concept of Hell is not something medieval or primitive but very real?

I'm only seeking Catholic answers. Unfortunately, I know from past experience non-Catholics will answer, so to those who do, please remain civil.

I'm directing this question ONLY to Catholics. Nothing that you can say will convince me the Catholic Church is wrong. I have had much more troubling questions and they have all been logically explained by Catholics and Catholic doctrine.

So, let's say Jesus didn't die. Would we have all gone to Hell? Also, why did we need a Savior? Why didn't God let people into Heaven?

Atheists don't believe in the existence of an afterlife. They believe that this time here on earth is all that is given to humans.

Following this logic, time is extremely valuable. Why would you waste a single second of such a precious commodity bashing religious people who don't affect you whatsoever?

And don't give me that nonsense about "their views impede on mine". They don't. This is a free country. No one affects anyone else.

All you seem to do is bash Christians when we don't affect you. You guys are the ones talking about freedom. So enjoy your freedom. Don't talk to us on this site by posing questions simply to incite argument.

I'm Catholic

I am looking for a Glock that is compact but not too small. The Glock 17, for example, is too big, and the 33 seems to small.

The Glock 38 seems good, any suggestions on a gun that I can easily carry and is not too big, but still able to get the job done and look a little large?

I'm writing a book, and I'm wondering what lethal drugs would take a while to kick in? For example, what could someone be poisoned with, but it would take a few hours for them to feel any effects and then die?

Based on my understanding, orthopedic surgeons, for example, have offices. What do they use them for? Simply to meet with patients and schedule? If they are not in the OR, what is the surgeon doing in their office? Seeing new patients, right? What else?

Everyone knows that when the police are chasing someone, the person stops once the cop pulls out a gun and points it at them. Why? Police can't shoot you if you aren't a threat to them, right? Running away from them is not a threat to their safety, so can they shoot you for not stopping? I don't understand.

I have a series of prayer cards that have short prayers for indulgences, yet it always says "with ecclesiastical approval"

How do I get such approval? What does it mean?

I have heard that the Church teaches that not only Catholics can be saved. If someone was never truly exposed to Christ but tried to do what their conscience told them was right and did well, they can still enter Heaven.

What about terrorists? They think what they are doing is right, but it is not? So does that mean that they go to Heaven?

I addressed this question to Catholics only, so please do not answer if you are not Catholic or do not have sufficient knowledge of Catholic theology in this realm.

Atheists claim they don't believe in God. So how come when they are in a life threatening or serious situation (car accident, going to a court sentencing, on their death bed) they pray to God and ask for His help?

Shouldn't you be firm in your beliefs? If you really don't believe in God, why are you talking to Him when your car is upside down on the freeway? You yourself said he was make believe, didn't you?

As a Catholic, I try to confess weekly. However, I know so many Catholics who haven't confessed in years, not because they don't agree with the Church or anything, but simply because they never understood the true importance of this wonderful Sacrament or never felt comfortable doing it. My 79 year old grandfather, for example, prays, fasts, reads the Bible, and attends Mass weekly. However, my grandmother told me he hasn't confessed in nearly 40 years.

Will such people be punished for this?

What if there are 2 people, who have lived basically the same life, same amount of sins, etc.

One dies peacefully in his sleep, and the other dies in a wild car accident, or a terrorist attack. What if one died peacefully, and one was tortured for hours and then beheaded.

Is God more lenient during judgment when one dies tragically and painfully, as opposed to one who dies peacefully?

I know the Catholic Church approves killing for self defense, but what about when it is not direct?

For example, if a group of terrorists are hiding out in a home, and a soldier is told to blow the house up and kill all of them because they are a threat to the nation, is that a sin? They are not a direct threat to him, but will be if left alone.

What if a soldier stumbles upon Osama Bin Laden, and tells his commander, who tells him to shoot Bin Laden? We all know he is not a threat at that moment, but will be if left alive?

I have heard that the more people suffer on Earth, the Church teaches that they will be rewarded a great afterlife (assuming they are good people, confess, etc.)

What about people who suffer as a result of their own choices? Someone who eats a lot, has a stroke, and becomes paralyzed? A factory worker who was careless at work and sawed off 3 fingers? A man who eats a lot of sugar, doesn't exercise, gets diabetes, and then goes blind?

All these people are suffering, but mainly because of their own choices. Does God still view such suffering as suffering?

Why do Catholics have to do good works? Didn't Jesus' death on the cross mean enough?

I have heard that lust is a mortal sin. Why? One of the conditions is that mortal sin must be a "grave and serious matter." I understand that lust is wrong, but is it really bad enough for us to be condemned to Hell? If I see a girl walking down the street, have impure thoughts, and then proceed to get run over by a car and die, will I go to Hell?

It seems a little harsh for something that is so small.

I am a senior in High School. My uncle works at the University that I want to attend. If he lists me as his son or makes me his guardian, I can attend for a very cheap price. Otherwise, I would have to pay normal tuition. My father and uncle decided it is a good idea, but I'm curious as to what the Church would say about this. Is it a sin?
