I mean 3-5 word subject summaries.. e.g. next to 2 paragraphs about pirates roughing up merchants is a gloss line like: "Dutchmen abused by Pirates." Would this be by the original text author, or by an editor? I have assumed it would be usually by an editor, so I should not quote the author specifically... if so, anyone have any data about attribution confidence or percentages? Would the author have always approved the gloss? Normally it would not matter, but I have a few cases where the gloss seems to be interpreting rather than summarizing, which seems to change key facts, and I am wondering if I should be treating it as secondary rather than primary source material.
