I have a broken Final drive on my Cat 311B (Serial# 8GR00397) and I am trying to figure out what other machines may have interchangeable final drives as the 311B is less than common. Does anyone know which machines I may be able to get a rebuilt drive off of?

I am considering building a micro hydro plant for my off the grid home as there is a pretty nice river with a fairly quick drop to it. The river is about 15' wide and 18" deep and flows quite quickly (would easily be a class 2 rapid maybe 3). Most hydro systems use head as a function of taking static water and dropping it over a long distance, something my topography does not allow for. I cannot, however, see why I can't use the rivers built up kinetic energy from its natural drop, but I do not know how to calculate how much electricity I will be able to produce due to the fact I can't really do a head calculation. Any Ideas to estimate production?
