  • Why do I have a problem thinking/reading out loud?

I have no problem thinking to myself or reading to myself, but when I have to do it out loud, I feel a dramatic decrease in my comprehension and flow of thought. Why is this?

  • What is the difference between 'could' and 'very well could'?

I'm not sure, but seems like 'very well' is sometimes important in describing verbs. Example:

"There is mention in CCIOA that a property owner can make someone else their representative, C.R.S. § 38-33.3-308(2.5)(a). This VERY WELL could be the person leasing the property."

When 'very well' describes a verb (Adverbial?) what's its purpose?

"This VERY WELL could be the person leasing the property."

    and

"This could be the person leasing the property."

seem very similar. I'm not sure which to use.

  • The physics of canning and a pressure cooker?

I would like some clarification about the physics of pressure cooking food. I just canned a bunch of beats at 15psi in my pressure cooker. The purpose of pressure cooking is to get the temperature high enough to kill bacteria. By raising the pressure inside the cooker, you can get higher temperatures.

Once I finished cooking, I let the cooker cool down and slowly release it's pressure. Everything was still hot, but the pressure inside was now equal with the room. I open up the canner and I see that the jars are bubbling on the inside. I think they're boiling, but it could also be some sort of pressure being released. I'm not really sure.

What's the pressure inside the jar at this point? I want to say it's greater than when I started, but then why would the lid be vacuumed shut?

  • I just opened up my canner after canning and my jars are bubbling. Did I mess up?

I let the pressure cooker cool down, but it wasn't room temperature when I opened the cooker. There wasn't any excess pressure inside the canner. When I did open it, the jars started to bubble on the inside. Is that normal or should I have let the jars cool to room temperature inside the canner?

  • My dog is mean. What should I do?

My dog is not very socialized, and when I take him for a walk, and he sees another dog, he becomes very excited. At first I wasn't sure if his actions were aggression, but over time I've seen that when he gets close enough to the dog he becomes obviously aggressive by growling and snapping.

So I simply avoiding the situation by crossing the street when there's another dog. That's the best I can do right now. But I think there's an underlying problem that needs to be dealt with, but I don't know how to deal with it. If my dog could be around other dogs and get used to the new confrontations, I don't think there would be a problem. Unfortunately, the way that he currently is, I can't bring him to dog parks or other social dog places.

Is my dog a lost cause? Should I just be content with the way he is, and keep him segregated from other dogs? How should I deal with his aggression?

  • What good does a signature do?

This isn't really a computer security question, but I does deal with general security.

The way I see it, a signature really isn't a very good security mechanism. It could easily be faked, and on top of that who's really going to check it? And how are they suppose to check its validity in the first place? It's not like there's an official registry where everybody's signature is stored. You can't 'look up' someone's signature.

What good does a signature do?

  • What's fastest? Compare a string or compare 4 numbers?

These sort of "which is faster" questions always come up in my mind.

Let's say I want to store an IP address in a database (mySQL).

    (XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX)

Two ideas come to mind. Store it as a string under attribute IP, or store it as an 4 different integers under attributes IP1, IP2, IP3, and IP4.

If I want to find a certain IP address in the database, which method of storage would be the fastest for searching and comparing? I've heard it takes longer to compare strings than numbers - on the other hand, I now have four integers I need to compare.

Any resources/terms that relate to these sort of questions would be appreciated. I'm trying to understand the big picture.

  • Why are we blind to our own flaws?

I'm convinced that there are flaws in my personality, virtues, and attitudes. There are flaws in my listening and in my speaking. There are flaws in the way I present myself.

I'm also convinced that I could go through my entire life and not even know about them. Truth be told, many of these flaws are very obvious. It's something that everyone else readily identifies, but for some reason, I can't see. Why are we blind to our own flaws?

Also, any resources/terms that relate to this flaw blindness would be appreciated.

  • If you put enough pressure on an element will it change?

I realize that all elements have a certain density, and that density can change slightly (like materials expanding when it's hot). If you put enough pressure on an element would it change into something else? Also, is it possible to decrease an element's density to the point where it would change?

    Thanks.

  • Solar Energy's Exponential Model?

So I watched this video by Ray Kurzweil:

    http://www.ted.com/talks/ray_kurzweil_announces_si...

At 5:38 he shows a graph of Photovoltaic Production. The graph shows an approximate doubling of photovoltaic use every two years.

I thought this was interesting. I'm sure cost was a factor in this behavior. What would happen if you graphed the cost of solar power per kW. Perhaps the cost of solar power is also following some sort of exponential model, and we can see when the cost of solar could rival the cost of coal/oil/other forms of energy.

Does anyone know if this has already been done? Does anyone know where I could find historic prices (like cost of solar/kW)?

  • What is the diff. between P and NP problems?

    http://www.claymath.org/millennium/P_vs_NP/

I'm not exactly clear what the difference between P and NP problems are. I know P problems can be solved by brute force. Is the million dollar question whether NP problems, given enough time, can be solved by brute force? What does it mean if P equals NP or P does not equal NP?

  • How have you learned to deal with other people's opinions of you?

I'm constantly thinking about what other people think of me. I could be having an enthusiastic conversation, and then I think that someone else is listening, and it's like my mind runs into a brick wall. Or I might be doing something, and I think someone is watching me, and I wonder what they think. It really messes my head. Anyone else deal with sort of thing?

  • Trig Equation: cos x = cot x?

The answers to this equation are between 0 and 360 degrees.

    0 <= x < 360

This is how I solved this:

    cos x = cot x

divide both sides by cot x

    cos x / cot x = 1

which turns into sin x = 1. Where is sin x equal to 1? At 90 degrees. That's the first answer to the equation. But it turns out in the original problem, 270 degrees is also a solution. How would I ever know that? Is my method for solving this wrong?
