I have a 1TB Western Digital My book Hard drive and when I plug it in to the USB port the computer detects and the instillation wizard pops up saying that it has been “successfully installed” but I cannot find my hard drive. However when going into disk management it is still not being seen there. but it shows up on device manager.

Can i use external hard drives 3.5" like a thumb-drive? i'm planning to store files in it, then hide it away only to be used again when i need the files? or must the device be always connected to my laptop?
