  • "The law should be enforced at any cost" - Agree or Disagree?

For example, according to an Essex MP, Travellers that have illegally built without planning permission (on land they own) should be evicted, which could cost the council as much as £10 million. Is this cost justified?

  • Does anyone remember this BBC drama?

It must be about ten years ago now. It was about a group of young friends, about 14-ish and I think it was set in about the 60s (not sure). One of the girls gets pregnant and her father takes her away. The second part is set later, where they are grown up and tells of the relationship between the girl and her child's father.

I think the title had 'birds' in it somewhere.

  • Advice about moving in with a friend?

I'm currently living in a house with three other girls, but two are leaving this year and me and my housemate C have to move out when our contract is up at the end of June.

I am a student in the South of the city, and where we are right now is very convenient for university and university social events. C has recently started her own business in the city centre, she is keen to get a place in the Northern Quarter of the city for convenience: she has to carry a heavy suitcase full of stock every day, and where we are now the bus takes 30 mins plus 10 min walk.

C suffers from depression. It comes and goes, but recently it got bad when she broke up with her boyfriend and self-harmed for the first time. I'm not much better in that department, having suffered from depression and anxiety. The reason this year has been better for both of us (barring the bf incident) is that we've had each other, we have quite a lot in common and neither of us really have many other friends in the city. I don't think it's a good idea for her to live alone, I know from experience how awful that can be. I'm not looking forward to the pot-luck of finding a houseshare as I find it hard enough to find friends as it is.

I've got to make a decision of whether to find a place in the Northern Quarter with C, sacrificing convenience and some social opportunities, or to look for another houseshare (or move back home if I have to) and let C find a place of her own. I don't particularly want to do either.

I need some advice, I don't know what to do!

  • How could anyone believe in ant sort of caring, intelligent designer?

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome causes compulsive self-mutilation. Children eat their lips or fingers and stab their faces with sharp objects. They feel the pain, but they can't stop themselves. Why would a loving, all-powerful creator allow anyone to be born with such an awful disease?

Lesch-Nyhan is one of tens of thousands of genetic diseases that afflict humans. At least 1 in 10 people have some kind of debilitating genetic disease, and most of us will become sick as a result of mutations that cause diseases such as cancer.

The reason? Our genome is an unmitigated mess. The replication and repair mechanisms are inadequate, making mutations commonplace. The genome is infested with parasitic DNA that often wreaks havoc. The control mechanisms are prone to error. The huge amount of junk, both between genes and within them, wastes cellular resources. And some crucial bits of DNA are kept in the mitochondria, where they are exposed to mutagenic waste products.

If some entity did meddle with life on Earth, either it didn't know what it was doing or didn't care.

  • "Dear God, please confirm what I already believe"?

    http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn18%E2%80%A6

"God may have created man in his image, but it seems we return the favour. Believers subconsciously endow God with their own beliefs on controversial issues.

"Intuiting God's beliefs on important issues may not produce an independent guide, but may instead serve as an echo chamber to validate and justify one's own beliefs," writes a team led by Nicholas Epley of the University of Chicago in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The researchers started by asking volunteers who said they believe in God to give their own views on controversial topics, such as abortion and the death penalty. They also asked what the volunteers thought were the views of God, average Americans and public figures such as Bill Gates. Volunteers' own beliefs corresponded most strongly with those they attributed to God.

Next, the team asked another group of volunteers to undertake tasks designed to soften their existing views, such as preparing speeches on the death penalty in which they had to take the opposite view to their own. They found that this led to shifts in the beliefs attributed to God, but not in those attributed to other people.

Finally, the team used functional MRI scans of subjects' brains to show that contemplating God's beliefs activates the same brain areas as thinking about one's own views, while thoughts about other Americans' views activate a brain area used for inferring other people's mental status."
