I can usually figure this stuff out myself, but I am at a loss after searching the internet all day. I live in Alabama and found this insect in my dog's food bowl. I went back in the house to find something to catch it. When I came back it was long gone. I grew up in a pretty rural area and have seen lots of weird things. I have never seen this before.

Description:

Red ant-like head and thorax. Huge jaws. I'm sure it packs a mean bite.

Abdomen seemed more beetle-like, being flatter and black. It's abdomen was also ribbed if that helps at all.

And finally it had two long appendages out its back, most likely ovipositors.

It had no wings and was about 1 1/2" plus about another 3/4" ovipostitors.

Based on what I saw I believe it to be some type of queen of the ant/wasp family. Any help identifying this would be appreciated. If anyone needs more descriptors or has any questions, I'll do my best to answer them.
