My baby is still nursing, but my milk dried up, what's up?
I'm determined to keep nursing my daughter until she weans. She's 14 months old, does get food through the day, but also wants milk off and on between meals or for comfort. She still wakes up in the middle of the night to nurse, too, and nighttime is when she does the real nursing. I have never had a problem with milk supply except when I get dehydrated; but three days ago I noticed she was barely getting any milk when she nursed. I even bought a half-gallon jug to fill every day to monitor how much water I was drinking. I'm amply hydrated, well fed and rested, but I'm still not producing. She's still nursing multiple times a day, and since nothing is coming out it's uncomfortable for me, especially since she usually refuses to let go. She doesn't want me to take it away since she feels like she hasn't been nursed, because nothing is coming out. I've looked on la leche league and googled the problem, but everything I've found says that if she's still nursing, my body will produce. And my body ISN'T! I'm not on birth control, I'm can't get pregnant, I have no known health problems, haven't changed my diet or exercise or ANYTHING, I'm hydrated, rested, and nursing multiple times a day. Wtf?
It won't be a serious problem if she weans because of this, I just hoped to let her wean herself when she was ready. She doesn't have enough teeth to make adult food a real viable option for ALL of her intake. She has 8 teeth, and two molars that just cut. We are all (her sister, myself, and her) allergic or intolerant of cows milk. There are the main reasons I preferred to tough it out until she weaned.
3 AntwortenNewborn & Babyvor 9 JahrenHow can I safely keep these fleas off my baby?
We just moved into a house in the country, and we're having a huge flea problem. Our cats are outdoor cats only, and the whole house is hard floors except for one room. We keep finding fleas on us, and my 9 month old is COVERED in bites. What can I do to get rid of these fleas?? There are no carpets to treat, I can't put pesticide in the baby's bed, and we have no indoor pets.
4 AntwortenOther - Petsvor 10 JahrenOk, brackish question.?
Has anyone had any success keeping spotted puffers in a community tank? Yes, I understand they're extremely aggressive and they aren't a beginner fish if I'm attempting something other than a species tank, but I was fooled into purchasing three by a less than honorable lfs. I was told they'd be okay to use as population control, and that they wouldn't kill my bigger fish. Well, they did. They cornered a fish and ripped it to pieces and ate it like pirahnas.
I talked to someone who raised puffers, and he pretty much said my best bet was to feed the tank regular food, and after all the other fish had eaten their fill, feed the puffers an extra supplement to sate their carnivorous appetites. Will this work or should I just get rid of them? It makes sense, because when I brought them home from the lfs, they were practically emaciated (part of the reason I bought them, poor things) and they really did wipe out half my molly fry in a few hours besides the adult they ripped to shreds... But I'm not going to keep them if this solution won't work.
I have 150 gallon tank, sand substrate, river rock and plastic plants for decoration. Tankmates for the moment are mollies and Kribs.
2 AntwortenFishvor 1 JahrzehntFish in distress, emergency?
I have a 150 gallon brackish aquarium. About an hour ago I realized all my fish were at the top. This isn't unusual, they're always expecting to be fed, but what is unusual is that it's all of them, even the fry. The only fish that isn't at the top is my dragon goby.
It's an emergency because I don't know what's wrong. I tested my water and nothing is coming up out of the ordinary. My nitrates are a little high, but they're actually a lot lower than they've been lately, nitrites are lower, and ammonia is fine. The pH is exactly what it's been since I set the tank up. I changed the lightbulb yesterday, but the temperature hasn't changed. We've experienced failure with keeping live plants, we took out the dead stuff yesterday and added three new cabomba. I read to leave the metal band on the bunch and plant it, and that's what I did. I can't imagine that would cause such a drastic problem so quickly, as all the plants were added late last night. I also put some blood worms in the tank last night. I took out the powerhead last night, because the cabomba is too delicate for it.
I had a molly abort her pregnancy (premature mollies everywhere, it makes me sad), my "pregnant" ghost shrimp is at the very top of the intake angling her body towards the surface, moving her eggs around top speed. Something is wrong, help.
6 AntwortenFishvor 1 JahrzehntSalinity in my tank keeps dropping.?
I put live sand in my aquarium yesterday after establishing a brackish salinity just below 1.010. I've used two hydrometers, one a plastic-swing arm. I wasn't satisfied that it was accurate, because dropping salinity didn't make sense, so I went and bought a bobbing glass thermometer/hydrometer combo. It's giving me the same thing: my salinity keeps dropping.
In chronological order: I added regular sand, water, marine salt, heaters, Stress Coat, and filtration system. Let that run for four days before adding more marine salt, because my hydrometer wasn't even registering that I had added any to begin with. I waited several hours for the salinity reading to be accurate, checked it and it read approximately 1.008. Then I added the live sand, bio-magnet clarifier and Stress Zyme. Throughout this entire week, I've had this foamy buildup on the top and around the edges of the aquarium. I keep skimming it off, and couldn't find anything online to tell me what could be causing it. When it tries it looks like residue from the sand. I don't have any fish or plants yet. Just a few minutes ago, I checked my salinity again, and it's reading 1.002. I'm scared that all the bacteria in my live sand is going to die or something, because the package said to establish salinity before adding it, and now my salinity has dropped to nearly nothing.
What should I do? What could be causing this? This is the first time I've ever attempted to maintain an aquarium with salt or sand.
Don't reply telling me you don't know, or any other random, unrelated bull. I would much appreciate real advice, thank you.
1 AntwortFishvor 1 JahrzehntI'm setting up a 150gal brackish aquarium. Any tips, ideas, advice?
So I buy fish from a freshwater retailer, poke a couple holes in the bag with a needle, and set it in the water.
How long should I leave the bag in the water before it's safe to let the fish out? A few of the fish I'm after are too delicate to go through hours of bucket dumping, and siphon dripping, so the bag/diffusion method seems the wisest choice. I'm assuming the time would depend on the salinity, I'm aiming to set the tank at 1.008, keep it at 81*. Salinity, hardness, pH, oxygen, all the other factors considered, how long should the fish sit in the bag before they're released?
At this point, I'm just in the researching phase, any advice would be absolutely wonderful. Ideas, fish suggestions, tips, techniques... I haven't had an aquarium in 4 years, so I'm a little rusty. I've only ever done freshwater, which seems considerably easier. I'll be using sand as a substrate, intend on live plants, driftwood, and rock slabs. Outside of the brackish fish, what freshwater and marine fish can adjust to a brackish environment?
Don't tell me about mollies, I already know. XD

I think the owl in Winni-the-Pooh was simply Owl. But what about the Tootsie-Pop owl? The Coco Wheats owl? Can you think of any more?
4 AntwortenComics & Animationvor 1 JahrzehntWhy is my baby's pee brown?
This is the third time in the last month that my baby (8 weeks old, now) went 12 hours or more without urinating. The first two times, when she finally did pee, it was dark, brown looking pee. It wasn't "amber" as the doctor said it could be after going so long, but actually brown. It smelled strong and foul, like old pee. I asked her doctor about it the first time. His words were, "I don't know why she went so long without peeing, but she's fine now."
This time, the smell and color were the same, except that there was a splotch of pink/rust orange in it. I thought it could be blood, so I took her (and the diaper) to the hospital. They sent me home with two different explanations and neither make much sense to me. First he (the emergency room doctor) said that it could be that her kidneys filtered out a chemical that reacted with her diaper to make it look that color. Never mind the smell, that didn't get explained. Then he said that her urine could have been so concentrated that it came out funny colors. They didn't cath her, they made me wait around for four and a half hours with a bag taped to her little parts, hoping to catch some urine. She peed at least three different times, and the bag didn't catch any of it! They got tired of waiting and sent me home with a bag and a cup, to collect a sample and take it to her doctor at her next appointment.
So... I feel like they're just blowing me off, one doctor didn't care, and the other didn't try too hard to find out. I know I'm a new mom, but I think it's pretty strange that a 2 month old baby isn't peeing for 12 hours at a time, then peeing brown and pink and pungent urine. What could be causing this?
