What is the root of this particular mindset?

Wouldn't they be doing something to curtail the operation of astronomical observatories (particularly radio-observatories), which would be one of the better means by which to detect it? And yet, such facilities are all permitted to act freely, despite the demonstrated tendencies of researchers to actively disseminate their findings. It's almost as if it's not really treated as any great concern at all...

Seriously; every other question in 'Astronomy and Space' seems to be about "solar storms", with this odd assumption that they're going to do massive damage to mankind and that one is inevitable. This big of a spike and this consistency of misunderstanding defies coincidence. Is History channel running an 'end of the world' marathon or something? I'm honestly wondering what has everyone so stirred up about the subject.
