  • Can I reinstall windows 8.1 on a new partition?

I recently bought a full retail copy of Windows 8.1 and installed it on a separate partition on an iMac. However I installed the 64bit OS which doesn't seem to be compatible with my mac, so I want to delete the partition it is on and reinstall Windows 8.1 in the same way with the 32bit CD instead. Is this possible to do without needing a new product key?

  • Epigenetic Imprinting?

I'm studying for my A2 Biology exam in january and have been struggling to understand Epigenetic Imprinting. It's christmas break so I can't ask my teacher.

The topic this has come under in my textbook is Prader-Willi Syndrome. It talks about how the syndrome is only inherited from the defective chromosome 15 from the father, which I am also struggling to understand.

If someone could explain all this to me I'd be very grateful, thanks!

(just incase anyone is familiar with the AQA examination board textbooks, I'm using "AQA A2 Human Biology" published by Nelson Thornes.)

  • Help with sleep problems due to Dementia?

My father has had prefrontal lobe dementia for about 5 years now, and his condition has deteriorated quite rapidly over the past 3 years. His judgement, memory, and speech is very poor now. He struggles to make meaningful sentences and barely understands what you say to him anymore, making communication very difficult. This leads to him becoming very frustrated, and frequently results in him having angry tantrums.

He's been prescribed Epilim (sodium valproate) to help calm him and prevent these outbursts, however they are still relatively frequent (one every 3-4 days).

The main issue I'd like help with here however is with his sleep. He used to sleep very well, as soon as his head hit the pillow he'd sleep like a baby until about 7.30 to 8am. Now though he will constantly rummage in draws around his bedroom for hours before going to bed. He also will wake up in the early hours of the morning (usually about 6am, but occasionally around 4am). At this time he'll have a shower thinking it's the morning and then will have to be coaxed back into bed. This can take up to an hour, and is very exhausting for my mother who has to go through this every single night. (she's healthy, and a lot younger than my father, but is becoming ill because of this.)

We've tried using Nitol to help his sleep, but it hasn't had any effect.

Recently the doctors have upped his dosage of Epilim to 200mg, but again not much difference in his sleeping, nor his outbursts, has resulted.

Is there anything else out there that we could try, or should be aware of, to help with his sleep problems? We will discuss this problem with our doctor, but I just want to get an idea of what we may be offered.

Other than Dementia, my father is physically very fit.

Thanks for any advice you may have :)

  • What could I do career wise with a Biology degree?

I'm currently in my first year of A levels and am giving some thought about what degree I'd like to do at uni, and what careers I could go into.

I'm studying Biology, French, Spanish, English Language, and *Chemistry at AS only (for doing biology at university)*. I'll be dropping English for A2.

I find biology really interesting, and I've always had a fascination with medical stuff, however I'm not overly keen on working in the medical sector.

Despite this I think I'd really enjoy doing a (human) biology degree at uni (have been to various open days and looked through many prospectuses) and the courses look great.

I'm also quite creative, and do a lot of photography, languages, piano, and writing. But I realise all of these things with my biology interests are a pretty big mishmash of things.

Any career paths or specific degrees that you'd recommend? I have thought of advertising even with a biology degree, although not sure how employers would see this.

    Advice really appreciated :) thanks.

  • A-level English Language coursework commentary length?

I've just completed both my commentaries for my two coursework pieces, however I'm not sure as to what the word count should be for them?

To begin with, my first commentary was around 2000 words, but my teacher told me to cut it down as it was too long. Now after amending that one, and having written the second one, both commentaries are around 1300 words each.

I fear that if I strip back any further important points which may get me more marks will be lost.

If I exceed the limit at all (not quite sure what it is, possibly around 1000 words each) would I lose marks, and would it be better to remove a few points to cut down on the word count in order to fit the limit?

  • What are my options (A-level/uni)?

I chose Biology, French, Spanish, and English Language for my A-levels this year, but I'm halfway through my first year and have realised it would have been much better to do Chemistry instead of one of the other subjects. The reason for this is that I am thinking about possibly doing Biomedicine or something similar at uni, and most unis require an A-level in chemistry to do the course.

My school is very small and so could not accommodate me starting Chemistry now. (Changing schools is not really an option as I am happy in all other subjects)

If i were to start it next year, i would have to go through a further year of 6th form just to get the chemistry A-level, which seems a little excessive.

I've heard some people say they were accepted into unis on Medicine or Biology courses on the condition that they did the chemistry A-level during the degree course. But I'm not sure if this is common.

If you have any ideas on other options I could take I'd be grateful, thanks!

  • What's the best way to group people on Facebook?

I have some people who've added me on Facebook who I'd like to have as friends, but not have them be able to see certain uploads or posts, ie. When I upload a picture album from a party on facebook I'd like to be able to choose to prevent a certain group of people seeing the album.

If you could tell me any way I could do this, it'd be much appreciated!

    Thanks

  • Carer's driver's licence at 16? (in UK)?

I'm 16 years old and am a carer, along with my mother, for my father who has dementia. This year his drivers licence was stopped because of his condition and it is making life even more difficult for us all.

Is there any way I could begin driving before I'm 17? My birthday is in october this year but it would give me the freedom to take him out without having to worry about stressing him out on public transport.

I've looked on Direct.gov.uk about driving ages and it states 17 is minimum for normal cars however 16 is the minimum if I'm "currently getting Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate (mobility component)".

Web page where this was found:

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensi...

I'm not entirely sure what this is referring to, so if you could clarify that that'd be great.

So if you have any ideas about whether me being able to drive now is a possibility or not I'd appreciate if you could advise me. Thanks.

PS. my mother does drive, however she works full time and isn't always there to drive my father and I to places. This is why I'd be interested in learning to drive right away.

  • Autofocus problem with my Canon EOS 500D, any help?

I've had this camera for just over a year now, and recently have started to notice the autofocusing going a little crazy. Sometimes when I press the shutter button and it begins to focus it will make the lens spin around backwards and forwards constantly without finding a focus point. (I'm assuming it's a problem with the camera and not the lens as this problem has occurred with all the lenses I have).

I have no idea what the is causing this, or if this is indeed an actual fault. Most times this problem has surfaced is while taking pictures in well lit conditions, and with subjects I wouldn't think would be challenging for autofocus.

  • Restoring a Mac from Time Machine?

I've had my iMac now for about 3 years and over that time it's become bunged up with old files and 3rd party software which have made it very slow.

I have an external hard drive that backs up my iMac using time machine. I was wondering if I could restore certain files and programs (incl. my iTunes library and Adobe Lightroom catalogues) but not an entire system restore.

I really do want to start afresh with my iMac so if you could give me some tips and steps on how to restore specific folders and iTunes etc. without restoring EVERYTHING that was on my harddrive before.

Also, for programmes such as Photoshop and Lightroom which have a 1 user licence would I be able to install them again, or would I have to buy another product key?

    Help is much appreciated, thanks!

  • Photography summer jobs/work experience for 16 year olds? (SouthEast London)?

I'm living in Kent in Southeast London, am 16 and in the final year of taking my GCSEs. I've thought about getting a job during the summer holidays (paid or unpaid) in photography as I'm passionate about it, and have a good knowledge of photography in general. However I'm not sure how I'd go about it. I have an SLR with a couple of different lenses so I'm very familiar with how SLRs work. I'm quite proficient in Adobe Lightroom, and have a little experience with Photoshop (although I'd like to learn more about it).

I'd just like to know how I'd go about finding a placement which would give me some good experience with working in the photography industry where I can get to learn about different aspects of it all, such as Lighting and Retouching in Photoshop etc.

I've looked around the internet and haven't really found any advertisements for young people looking for work experience or part time jobs, and also my school has been no help whatsoever in helping me out here!

So if you could help point me in the right direction or even let me know of any work placements that would suit me it'd be great, thanks!

  • Photography A-Level, good or bad?

I'm coming to the end of my GCSEs this summer and am wondering what will be my fourth As Level subject.

These are what I definitely want to do:

    •French

    •English Language

    •Biology

But for my fourth subject these are the options I'm considering:

    •Spanish

    •Literature

    •Photography

I'm pretty good at languages but not sure if I want to do both French and Spanish at A-Level, and although I enjoy literature I barely read much. In my spare time I love to do a lot of photography and as my school is now offering an A-level in it I am wondering if it's a worthwhile subject.

Careers wise I'm thinking of going into something like the creative side to advertising or studio photography. But I'd still like to go to a good Uni (kings college would be great) and do a degree.

My problem is that some say it's quite limiting in terms of future opportunities, and not seen as a strong subject especially when it comes to requirements for Unis.

So if you've got any suggestions on what would be the best idea I'd be really greatful :)

Ps. if you have done photography A-level yourself what things did you do and what did you think of it?
