  • Elliptical Orbit of a Comet?

Comets travel around the sun in elliptical orbits with large eccentricities. If a comet has speed 1.5×104m/s when at a distance of 2.8×1011m from the center of the sun, what is its speed when at a distance of 4.4×1010m.

  • Gravitational Acceleration for Density Changing Planet?

Planets are not uniform inside. Normally, they are densest at the center and have decreasing density outward toward the surface. Model a spherically symmetric planet, with the same radius as the earth, as having a density that decreases linearly with distance from the center. Let the density be 1.30×104kg/m^3 at the center and 3300kg/m^3 at the surface.

What is the acceleration due to gravity at the surface of this planet?

Volume for a sphere is (4/3)*pi*R^3

  • Work and orbital motion around a planet?

A 3440-kg spacecraft is in a circular orbit a distance 1690m above the surface of Mars.

How much work must the spacecraft engines perform to move the spacecraft to a circular orbit that is 4810m above the surface?

The mass and radius of Mars is 6.42*10^23kg and 3.4*10^6m respectively.

  • Laws of Gravitation and Shell Theorem?

A uniform, solid, 1600.0kg sphere has a radius of 5.00m. Find the gravitational force this sphere exerts on a 2.50kg point mass placed at the following distances from the center of the sphere: (a) 5.03m, and (b) 2.70m.

    I got the first, it's simply F=G(m1*m2)/r^2 = 1.05*10^-8

For the second, I know I need to use shell theorem, but I don't get it. It's a solid sphere, with a point mass inside the shell.

  • Help With Moment of Inertia?

A compound disk of outside diameter 144cm is made up of a uniform solid disk of radius 34.0cm and area density 4.60g/cm^3 surrounded by a concentric ring of inner radius 34.0cm, outer radius 72.0cm, and area density 2.30g/cm^3.

Find the moment of inertia of this object about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the object and passing through its center.

  • Rotating Bike Sprocket?

While riding a multispeed bicycle, the rider can select the radius of the rear sprocket that is fixed to the rear axle. The front sprocket of a bicycle has radius 12.5cm.

If the angular speed of the front sprocket is 0.700rev/s, what is the radius of the rear sprocket for which the tangential speed of a point on the rim of the rear wheel will be 4.50m/s? The rear wheel has radius 0.330m.

  • Physics Question On Rotational Dynamics?

The flywheel of an engine has moment of inertia 4.00kg*m^2 about its rotation axis.

What constant torque is required to bring it up to an angular speed of 360rev/min in 10.2s, starting from rest?
