  • Today, a coworker saw my self harm scars....?

I work in a nursing home and today at work a coworker grabbed my wrist and said "are you a cutter? I hope you didn't attempt suicide, I can call someone if you need." All I was saying was "no it's not, shhhh, stop talking about it, okay?" because we were near the residents and other coworkers who don't know I deal with self harm. He is an older male, in his early 40s. I'm 21 and have been dealing with self harm for four years. On one of my wrists there are scars but they don't seem very noticeable imo, so I don't bother covering them most of the time unless I go through a spurt of self harming again which generally happens around once a month for about a week then I am okay again, it's kinda weird.

The only coworker that knows other than him now is my supervisor who literally noticed within about a month of me being hired. He is my age so it wasn't a big deal. I was terrified that this coworker who just found out would tell other people because we always joke around with each other on a friendly basis. I work for Activities at a nursing home and this coworker is a CNA and him and most of the other CNA's I get along with and we joke around about random things, all the time. I pulled him aside before I left for the day and made sure he wouldn't tell anyone. He said he wouldn't, but it's just so weird. I didn't think anyone would even think they were self harm scars.

It's going to be so weird to see him again, I kind of want to avoid him. I love this CNA to death but it's so weird. I thought about telling one of the other CNA's because I am closer to him, though he doesn't know about it.. just cause I was so anxious after he found out. I decided not to tell him just yet because his girlfriend is the social worker where I work and I really don't want her to find out and since he is really close to her I would be very nervous her finding out. I am a junior in college in the social work program, also.

It's just weird and I wanted to tell someone. Argh.

  • Finger injury after a rat bite?

Hey, earlier today one of my rats bit me and drew a lot of blood because i decided to try to split up a rat fight. I cant really put any pressure or move my joint (the one next to my hand, closest to my hand index finger joint) because it hurts. I can't type with it because it hurts to press the keys.

Could this be just because the bite is sore, and close to the joint/bendy part? Or could it be signs of infection?

  • Rat bite, broken skin?

    http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/552644_...

Here is some of the blood, I soaked through a few napkins, got blood on my door (I dripped as i was trying to leave the room to get a bandaid) etc.

My rats have NEVER done this, but I interfered with a rat fight. I have six male rats and they got my index finger (one of them).

Should I be concerned about anything? Or should I be ok? They are all domesticated.

  • PLEASE HELP: Major male rat attack, dying rat?

I have six male rats and all of them were healthy. Now 5 of them are healthy, and one is dying. I am assuming it was an attack, but I am not sure. He was my shyest one and generally would not come near me and was just starting to open up to me this past week and just a few hours ago when I went to clean the cage (I clean the cage entirly every other day) i noticed some blood. At first i thought it was a rat attack and was going to check the rats for minor cuts, but then I found more blood, and what I mean by more blood... a LOT for a rat. Like, a lot. I had already let all the rats out of the cage and didn't realize the wounded one yet but as soon as I saw, I went to the rat who I thought of first and it was him. I checked all the rest and they are fine. This one is bad. I don't want to share the photo I have, but it is indeed intestines. About 1/4 of his belly is cut open, or what seems like it, and intestines and blood is just coming out. He's STILL alive. I put him in a crate with some newspaper for him to tear up and some cheerios (because those are like a favorite of all of them, but he can't really eat anymore...) He is still moving around.... I know he is going to die, he has lost a LOT of blood. Blood is all over my carpet, boxes, etc. Because when I tried to get him when I realized he was bleeding he ran from me, and it took me a little bit to get him (cause they were all out of the cage for play time)

Anyway. Long story short... he was attacked majorly and he is bleeding so, so bad. They are all males and like, all of his testicles are gone. Thats where he was attacked I am assuming, and everything is coming out of a hole where those testicles used to be.....

PLEASE give me any advice you have. I know he is going to die. I called an emergency hotline for animal emergencies and they said to soak him in warm water but if he is going to die anyway, there is no point, because they said warm water is for minor injuries. Stuff keeps coming out of him. I am not even joking. I would post a picture, but I don't feel it's right. <3.....

  • Male rat fight: Blood drawn..?

I have six male rats, all got at the same time, from the same cage, etc. One of my males (Rango) apparently got in a fight with who I am assuming Spike, and near his eye has fresh blood. Is this still dominance fighting, or is there something else going on? I do NOT have another cage. They all live in a double unit critter nation like http://compare.ebay.com/like/110878402846?var=lv%3... this one.

Any suggestions on how to reduce fighting would be helpful. I've had them for about 3 weeks now, and only within the past week have they really started dominance fighting.

  • Male Rats Fighting? Dominance?

I have six male rats, all got at the same time, same place, lived together, etc. Now I have two rats who seem to "match up" (stand on their hind legs and stare at each other nose to nose). Normally Pebbles (one of the rats) surrenders but if he doesn't, Spike isn't going to surrender and they will fight until Pebbles surrenders. Neither of them are hurt or injured, though. Is it normal for them to "match up" like this? I've only seen them do this one day, and they kept doing it. They were doing it yesterday during play time out of the cage, I split them up if they stare at each other for too long..

Is this normal? How can you get them to stop?

  • Why does one of my rats HATE being in the cage?

Before you might assume it's a boring/too small cage or lonely rat-- here's the cage:

    http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s398/Lizzerdz/...

    And here's the rat

    http://i1049.photobucket.com/albums/s398/Lizzerdz/...

He has 5 other "rat mates". They're all males.

He constantly wants out though! They come out of their cage for supervised play time once a day for between 1-2 hours depending on how rambunctious they are or if they get tired. This one, though, (Spike) always wants out. He like, hogs me for attention. I've only recently gotten these rats. (I've had them all for about 2 weeks now, and they're all doing great--got them at the same time, same place, same cage, all male)

The cage gets rearranged, new toys added or toys switched out every day or other day, also. I switch between newspaper and fleece bedding.

  • Can you get new rats from different places without having to have an "introduction period"?

I know you have to have an introduction period--but if you get new rats (male) same day, without having any prior rats in the same cage, from two different stores--do they still have to have an introduction? I'm assuming so... but, just making sure.

  • Why do my cats act this way when eating?

I have 3 cats and two of them are siblings. One of the siblings (our thinnest, but healthy weight) goes to every plate wildly when they get fed and always goes to the bowl that gets the wet food first. (between the 3 we split one can of wet food and a handful of dry twice a day) but once she gets bored, she switched to Charlie's bowl (her sibling). Charlie, when "challenged" for his food just walks away, whether he's full or not. He won't go to any other bowl unless you carry him to it or bring the bowl to him. Is it just their temperment? Why do they do this? He's a medium sized cat. Then our other cat just eats EVERYTHING. She's huge. And very obese. >.>

  • I'm at a loss of what classes to have for these Detainee's at the Detention Center?

I am a full time college student who is working and volunteering. I LOVE volunteering at the detention center but sometimes I feel like I am wasting my time when I could just work and earn actual money instead of spending useless time at the detention center trying to have classes in which half the time, it seems that no one or very few want to get up for.

Right now I watch over them as they exercise, but they are losing interest.

I've done GED classes a few times but haven't done it since my incident of losing a pen (which is a big deal at a jail), but I am considering doing it again, as it would be beneficial and many of them don't have high school diplomas.

Then again, I am considering a self-help class using the book "You can heal your life" by Louise L. Hay. Main reason is because I already have that book and it does give good suggestions and you learn from it, even though I don't agree with everything she says, since she strongly believes diseases and things can be caused by our thoughts (which I don't believe in at all.) But other than that, it's a good self-help book. They're all really depressed for the most part, which is why I think it'd be good for them.

Or anything else. I have no clue what to do. I need to come up with something that they will enjoy, learn from, etc, and most importantly want to get up for.

The thing is, is that I'm a freshman in college, just out of HS, I'm switching OUT of the education major, I'm not very firm in my voice (which I am working on), I'm not a good educator, etc. I do not want to spend any extra money on this as I don't even have much faith they'll be interested in participating.

Any advice, suggestions, or encouragement would be loved :)

  • What can you cover a burn with that won't stick to it?

I have a 2nd degree burn and I am running out of jumbo bandaids to cover it with. I only cover it when I am out and about. When I am home I leave it uncovered to air it out, but my pant leg sticks to it if I don't have a bandaid on. Any ideas would be appreciate it :) And, how do you decrease pain when walking from the burn? It's not a large burn, it fits under a jumbo bandaid (just barely). But it hurts when I walk because of it.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Weird fly like bug? Southern NM?

I have never seen these bugs until about a month or two months ago. The best way I can describe them is like a fly. It flies, it's black like the fly, and is about the same size of a fly or a little longer. The difference is it had REALLY long hind legs or something that looks like hind legs.

The only thing that looks remotely close to it is the adult female Culex halifaxii, though a black one...not brown.
