  • Did I miss something about Christians and the Old Testament?

I answered this question a while ago:

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjwlP...

and something didn't seem right. The questioner wanted atheists to lay off the talk of the Biblical atrocities because they were in the Old Testament and Christian, "... no longer follow the Old Testament."

Aren't the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament?

  • Is the Marine Corps Hymn patriotic for Americans?

I was in Religion and Spirituality. Someone asked for patriotic songs that don't include the word God. Longs story short, Two people (myself and another person) answered the Marine Corps Hymn. The asker claimed in an addition detail that it was written by a Frenchmen and debuted in France, as if to imply that made the song somehow less patriotic.

Was it written by a Frenchmen? Does that make is less patriotic?

  • Is it a fact that people worshiped thousands of gods before the Abrahamic God?

There is historical evidence. Is that historical evidence enough to count as empirical evidence?

  • Why would God send a natural disaster as punishment for exercising our free will?

First off, gods are make believe.

That said, many Christians feel God gave man free will because He didn't want a bunch of people believing in Him because He forces us to believe.

In many responses to the question of why bad things happen, most Christians respond, "To test our faith."

I read a response to a question about free will that involved having a gun to our heads. Wouldn't a tsunami, earthquake or plague be kind of like a gun for a god?

God - Do you believe in me?

    Human - Not really, no.

God - Okay, you have that right. ((((( Massive earthquake killing thousands ))))) Believe in me now?

Human - What was that all about? I said I don't believe in you and you send an earthquake?

God - It's just a test of faith. ((((( massive flood ))))) How about now?

Human - Oh, now your making me hate you.

God - You have that right. ((((( plague killing millions ))))) Any changes? Still think I'm not real.

Human - All right! I believe! Just leave me alone.

God - Okay, you have that right.

Am I missing something? How is putting a plague to our heads and forcing belief that way any different than just removing free will from us?

  • If I have free will, how is God all-powerful?

I'm seeing many answers that say God is the all-powerful maker of all things. If he can't even make me believe in him, how did be make anything else? Does his inability to make me believe disprove his all-powerfulness?

  • If I don't believe in Hell, what should I be afraid of?

Hell is no more real than heaven. Isn't condemning me to a make-believe realm a pointless response to my atheistic beliefs? Wouldn't it be just as sensible to say the Big, Bad Wolf is going to eat my Grandmother? Or Freddy Kruger will haunt my dreams? Or Santa won't leave me a gift this year?

  • If God never existed, how does creationism work?

I do not see how the Abrahamic God of Christianity is any different than Zeus, Ra, or Odin. So, if the Abrahamic God is only a myth, how did he create anything?

  • Fellow atheist, can we just use logic?

I see a bunch of us getting into big debates about evolution, the Big Bang and all kinds of other scientific issues. Why are we making it all so complicated?

My favourite logic argument is this:

    - All gods throughout history have been myths.

    - The Abrahamic God of Judaism, Christianity and Islam is a god like all the others.

    - The Abrahamic God is a myth.

Thus, there is no reason to argue against religious beliefs using science.

The Bible? God never existed so it's a lie.

Creationism? God never existed so it's a lie.

Jesus was the son of God? God never existed so it's a lie.

Intelligent design? God never existed so it's a lie.

Eternal life in heaven? God never existed so it's a lie.

No science. No theories. Just plain, simple, every-old-day logic.
