My laptop:

Acer intel core i5-2410M 2.3 GHz

Nvidia geforce GT 540M 2 GB

8 GB memory ram

Note:

in device manager --> display adapters: There are 2 graphic cards.

- Intel HD graphic family

- Geforce GT 540M

- Windows 7 home premium 64 bit

My laptop should have the optimus technology. At least a sticker on my laptop says that.

Problem:

I have owned this laptop for almost 2 years right now. And unfortunately, recently I am aware that my laptop might never have use the geforce card and have always used the intel HD card. I knew from games that other people said works perfectly, good, etc. While mine still lags. I tried just cause 2. Benchmark report, to my surprise, use intel HD card. Uh oh..... I google and found an article says to use MSI afterburner to check it. And it shows my geforce constant at 0% usage. The Nvidia GPU activity is none.

Things I did:

- My laptop is always on AC power with full maximum performance settings.

- Use the nvidia control panel, set some games to run using high performance Nvidia processor.

- Right click games shortcut / exe and click run with graphic --> Nvidia

- Update graphic card (up to date)

- Re-install Nvidia driver and re-update

- Disable intel HD graphic --> my screen turned to pitch black with desktop still working (sounds heard, so have to enable it again after restart)

- Search the word optimus in my laptop (none found. What the......)

Regardless of what I did. it still uses the intel HD card proudly. :(

I google some and notice the solution offered was re-install windows. But I'm questioning what guarantee that it will work? After all, I did install this OS my self back then. What would be the difference now if I re-install it again?

I have original windows 7 premium installed on my laptop. The laptop was now unusable due to broken vga/motherboard. So I'm planning to buy a new laptop. Can I use the windows 7 OS I have? Or I should buy a new one?

I have a broken vga-motherboard problem. The computer is on, but the screen is off. So the service man explain the problem was in the motherboard-vga. What I want to ask is what usually cause this?

Is it an over heat since I often leave it turned on hours (>12 hours) for downloads?

Or is it because I only use the laptop adapter without electric stabilizer?

Here is the problem. My notebook is broken. The service man said the problem is in the vga-motherboard. He advised me to buy a new one, rather than repair it and I agree. So there are 2 options that I can think of, first buy a new notebook, which is easy. Second, how about just buy a new vga-motherboard just to replace the broken one, since it's cheaper and nothing else is broken.

My question is:

- Is it possible to do so?

- Is it hard to do so?

- Can I replace it to a newer motherboard with excellent graphic card to play games? If yes, is there any things I should know?

Which one you thing as a better solution? Buy a new laptop of just buy a new motherboard?

Could anyone kind enough to teach me how to measure laptop/desktop vga graphic cards for playing games?

Like what I should look from a graphic card? The memory? The clock rate? Or what? Example Geforce 8800 vs Geforce GT 540M. How can I now which one is better for playing games since I don't understand the code of 8800 and GT 540M. Also what people mean by low-end card, high-end card. How do you know that?

Last question, how do I compare it with other graphic cards like Ati radeon, how can I know which one is better. Example Geforce 8800 with ati radeon HD4700. Or Geforce GT540M vs ati radeon HD 6900.

Please teach me how to choose a graphic card especially for laptops. Thank you.

It's really confusing for me. intel core i7 is much better than those right? But is there any down side of it? Also any down side of turbo boost (up to 2.9 Ghz) ? From the 4 options above, which one is better for playing games?

Anyone could tell me what is the side effects of hysterectomy? I prefer a live experience rather list of symptoms from the book or random internet article.
