  • Japan's Radioactivity & Eastern USA?

    For curiosity I've been measuring background radiation outdoors in an Eastern state to see if I there was any measurable change this week due to the winds coming from Japan. Today the average counts per minute was one(1) count higher {at 18 cts/m} over the average of each day up until today.

    My instrument's millirem/hour {equivalent dose rate} is determined by dividing counts/min by 1000.

    Assuming this added one count per minute remains constant as additional background radiation. What is this additional radiation going to add to an Eastern USA resident's yearly millirem total? _______ (a)

    Compare this additional annual radiation to that of a single chest X-ray? _________ (b)

  • Equivalent Dose Radiation Units?

    The SI dose equivalent UNIT of radiation = the Sievert {Sv} = 1.00 J/kg

    The USA dose UNIT of radiation = "Roentgen Equivalent Man" {rem} = 0.01 J/kg

    The minimum fatal dose of radiation for a 200 lb man = 455 J of radiation

    A) What is this minimum fatal dose in the SI system UNIT? ____________ Sv

    B) What is this minimum fatal dose in the USA system UNIT? ___________ rem

  • Physics - Current Mine Rescue - Can U Solve?

    The mine rescue operation in Chile, currently ongoing, divulges data thru the news media and TV that affords some simple physics calculation: Here's the data:

    We're told the depth of the mine is 2040 ft.

    The weight of the rescue capsule + average weight of (each) man = 1200 lbs.

    Time capsule takes from mine floor to ground = 15 min. {assume constant speed}

    Time capsule takes from ground to mine floor = 10 min. (assume constant speed}

    The large pulley wheel {seen on TV at the top of the lift rig is divided into ten(10) equal angular segments (by spokes). The lift cable subtends approx 3.5 of these segments.

    Questions:

    1) What is the minimum horsepower(hp) reqd. of lift motor/engine to rescue a miner?

    {1.0 hp = 550 ft-lb/s}

    2) What is the minimum hp reqd. to lower capsule from ground to mine floor?

    3) How many revolutions of the big pulley atop the rig to rescue a miner?

  • Chemistry - practical application?

    I would like to avoid the increasing price of common

    bleach solution (sodium hypochlorite, 6% available chlorine by weight).

    sold at grocery stores. Currently in my area the cheapest

    generic is $ 1.50 gallon.

    So I checked out the price of a crystalline substance

    with formula: C3 H4 Cl2 N3 Na O5 that's used to chlorinate pools/spas,

    and is 55% by weight, available chlorine. 14 oz (397 g) of this

    chemical costs $ 9.00.

    If I mix up chlorine sol'n from this chemical, that is

    the equivalent strength of available chlorine to that

    sold in grocery stores, do I lower the cost per gallon

    below store bought?

  • Physics - Magic Trick?

    A magician pulls a tablecloth from a table that has a 0.85 kg vase on it, half-filled with water. If he pulls in such a manner that the tablecloth is removed at the minimum speed necessary to keep the vase and its contents stationary - with what force must he pull? (answer to 1 decmal place)

    additional info:

    ----------------------

    vase capacity = 1.0 L

    coefficient of kinetic friction between table and tablecloth = 0.3

    coefficient of static friction between vase and tablecloth = 0.6
