  • Why am I so misunderstood?

Ok, let's start with this proposition: I am a teenage male just trying to find my place in life. When I was little, I was a shy kid who was really serious. Now that I have "grown up" [used loosely], I have become a little less serious. I can still be introverted, but not shy.

Anyways, according to my family, I am categorized as the kid who is like one of my uncles. Unfortunately, one of my uncles that I am "alike" to died of a heart attack and was known to be serious and a loner.

I do not want to be known as that to others. I just want to be a normal dude. I try to take life a little less seriously - however, whenever I try to be funny, my mother nags that I think "everything is a joke."

I don't understand what people want from me. Do I be serious or relaxed?

I can't exactly be too relaxed since I am very serious about school because I want to get into the best university possible and succeed. I just want to succeed.

So, I don't know whether to take life less seriously or not. I fear that relaxing will affect my future success and staying serious could affect my reputation and health.

    Help!

  • Economics at UF or UCF?

Which university has a better economics program? I have browsed through course descriptions for the University of Florida's Economics courses. They mostly sound like the social science / theory type subjects that would not be as useful as the more quantitative economics subjects. BSBA and BA majors have the same elective choices.

Then, I browsed through the University of Central Florida's BSBA Economics. I noticed that there were more quantitative economics subjects such as mathematical economics, econometrics, topics in econometrics, etc. UF does not offer any of those courses.

So which one has a better economics department? UF is apparently ranked higher according to US News and World Report, however. I am frustrated because I know that UF is pretty much the best university one can get into in Florida. However, I am not sure that state - wide prestige is really transferrable to the rest of the country. Is going to UF just for the "prestige" a bad idea?

    Thanks for the help.

  • UF Computer Science Differences?

What is the difference between the Computer Science Engineering degree and the Computer Science degree from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida?

Do recruiters and employers value the Engineering degree over the Liberal Arts one because Engineering is more technical?

Is there a difference in job placement?

    Thanks.

  • Computer Science jobs in the financial industry?

What job opportunities are there in the finance industry with a BS in Computer Science?

The only "business" job I see is a "Computer Systems Analyst" and after researching more about the role, it doesn't seem like the career for me.

Is there any demand for Computer Science grads in banking? If so, what kind of job titles are out there? I love computer science, but I can't see myself being a software developer all my life. I want to branch out into the business / finance side of the field.

    Thanks.

  • Economics vs Computer Science Major at USF?

I am a high school student who is thinking about going to the University of South Florida. I am debating between Business Economics and Computer Science as my major. These two subjects really interest me.

Since it is a state university, I believe that Computer Science would be the better choice. This is because I was told that Economics is more worthwhile from a well - ranked / prestigious college in the subject.

However, I don't have any programming experience unless you count messing around with HTML. Would that affect me in my academics as a Computer Science major in any way? My high school does not offer any AP Computer Science courses. It does offer a Web Design sequence of classes, but since I am in the IB Programme, I chose to take Physics I Honors as my sole elective for junior year.

As for Economics, I picked up interest for the subject while reading magazines / journals such as The Economist, Money, and Wall Street Journal. Economics majors are successful in finance, which is something I am interested in working in.

If I major in Economics, then I will probably minor in statistics or mathematics, meaning that the whole "Computer Science is hard because of math" statement won't really help me make a decision. This is because I have been told countless times that "Economics is useless as a major without at least a minor in math or stats."

I fear that I won't be smart enough for Computer Science or that it will make me more anti - social than I already am [I'm kind of a nerd, haha] which would hinder my networking and interview skills.

Also, the IB Programme emphasizes writing ability and well - roundedness. I think that an Economics major would utilize these things a lot better.

However, I am still interested in Computer Science, and there seems to be a lot more opportunity as far as potential jobs.

    Help!

Which one would be better from a state university?

    Thanks.

  • How to become a financial analyst?

I am a high school student who is interested in becoming a financial analyst. I formed a plan on how to achieve that goal. My question is: Is this an effective plan? Also, should I just go straight to work after my bachelors degree or go straight to a masters degree? Would an MBA be better than a MS in Finance?

Anyways, here is my current plan:

Bachelors in Arts - Economics with a minor in math

Then get a Masters in Science - Finance

Then get a Chartered Financial Analyst Certification after some work experience. [Apparently work experience is required before taking the certification.] Do you study for it while working?

    Thanks.

  • Is Economics / Applied Economics a good major?

I am a high school student who is currently in the IB program in Florida. I was wondering if Economics or Applied Economics [Applied is offered at FSU] would be a good major. I haven't taken a formal class in Economics because I am in the IB program. My school only offers economics as a requirement for non - IB seniors. However, I have garnered a good amount of interest in the subject from books, journals, news, and magazines like The Economist.

I am not sure what I want to do for a career specifically, but I know I want to do something in that field. I want to major in Economics and minor in either Stats or Computer Science in order to enhance my quantitative skills.

Is Economics a lucrative major for finding a well - paying job in this current market?

Also, I plan on pursuing a masters degree after a few years of work experience.

    Thanks.

  • FSU or UF Economics Programs?

I am trying to decide which one is better... FSU has an Applied Economics program, which I view as better than UF's normal liberal arts and "business" economics programs. Is there really a difference? I want to do Applied Economics, but I fear that FSU is viewed as inferior to UF in most things besides Law.

    Thanks.

  • I'm not smart enough for Industrial Engineering?

I'm a junior in high school and I fear that I am not smart enough to handle the engineering curriculum in college. I attend a Florida high school, but I'm in the IB program. By the time I graduate, the highest level of math I will have taken would be IB math [calculus and descriptive statistics]. Some of my friends who are considering engineering are practically geniuses in my opinion who are ahead of me in math. Also, I'm terrible at chemistry.

I'm a straight A student so far, but I still fear that's not enough. I am deciding between Industrial Engineering and Economics at UF. Sometimes I guess that this is just a confidence issue, but I'm not sure. Help!

I am planning to major in Economics and minor in statistics.

    Thanks.

  • Business Economics or Industrial Engineering Major?

I'm a high school student who is debating between selecting Economics and Industrial Engineering as my major.

Industrial Engineering seems a lot more prestigious than economics, and the job opportunities are more apparent.

However, Economics seems much more interesting and not as strenuous as Industrial Engineering. Also, I prefer not to work in a manufacturing factory anyways. The jobs associated with an Economics degree seem to be much less apparent than Industrial Engineering, so I fear I might deal with low pay, or even worse: unemployment.

Industrial Engineering provides a more defined set of skills than Economics, but I fear that I might not do well in this major, as I might not be smart enough [the highest level of math I'll have taken by the end of senior year is IB Math SL - Calc. and Descriptive Statistics] thus leaving me with only the crappy jobs.

Yet, Industrial Engineering would seem to let me be more of a benefit to society than Economics.

What exactly can someone even do with a bachelors in Economics from a University's Business department? Any specific job titles? Are these well paying with good room for advancement?

Whenever I see lists of majors by salary, Economics majors usually surpass Industrial Engineering with median salaries of $93k +. Why is this?

Which degree would better suit an introvert? [me]

    Thanks!

  • Major in Industrial Engineering or Statistics?

I'm a high school student who is considering between two majors for college:

    Industrial Engineering or Statistics.

My favorite subjects are math, english, and history.

Anyways, my parents are basically forcing me into engineering, as they think I'm that smart. I'm not the smartest person in my class, as there are amazing intellects in my class who aspire to be in the medical or engineering field. They are rather advanced.

I watched many videos and read job descriptions of industrial engineers and honestly, it doesn't seem too exciting or something I would be good at.

So, I noticed that statistics utilizes the subjects I am interested in... But I don't want my parents to view me as a disappointment / failure. My dad [he's a doctor] insists that the only good stable jobs are in engineering and to a lesser extent, the medical field. Apparently, the only way to make a very good salary in business is by going to a top school.

What jobs can an undergraduate statistics major get?

Which major gets a better salary?

I plan to get an MBA after some work experience with either major; with a concentration in perhaps operations management, logistics, or something else.

Please help! I'm very stressed about this... It hasn't left my mind.

    Thanks.

  • Which is harder: Industrial Engineering or Economics?

I am a high school student.

Which one is the more difficult major in terms of work load, overall concepts, prerequisites, etc. ?

I am considering majoring in either one... But I am worried that I might not be smart enough for Industrial Engineering. I suck at chemistry and I'm a little above average at math compared to my IB classmates...

    freshman year - honors geometry

sophomore year - regular algebra II

    junior year - pre calculus

senior year - IB Math SL [calculus and statistics]

Is this good enough for a prospective Industrial Engineering student? Or should I just major in Economics? Please help!

  • Industrial Engineering or Business Economics Major?

I'm a high school student who is considering between Industrial Engineering and Business Economics for my major.

Which bachelor's degree: Industrial Engineering or Business Economics can allow me to get a well paying, stable job?

Industrial Engineering seems applicable, but I absolutely hate chemistry with a passion. Is chemistry used in the profession?

Business Economics seems interesting and it's on the lists for highest paying majors. Why isn't Industrial Engineering on those lists?

However, I'm not exactly sure of what specific jobs one can get with this degree. Any job titles?

Also, will the use of 3 - D printers lessen the demand for industrial engineers?

  • Bachelors in Accounting vs Bachelors in Business Economics?

I am a high school student who is finally considering two different majors:

    Accounting or Business Economics.

Here are the perceptions I have drawn from online research:

Business Economics = much higher salaries, more interesting, more intellectually stimulating, less job opportunities, less room for advancement, more prestigious. Also, what type of professions can someone a Business Economics major pursue anyways?

Accounting = lower salaries, less interesting, less intellectually stimulating, less glamorous, much more job opportunities, more possibilities for higher advancement.

I am in the International Baccalaureate, so I want to major in the more intellectually rigorous of the two. My parents are also looking for prestige in a sense. I want them to be proud when they say "My son is a [accounting or economics] major.

I plan to minor in either statistics or mathematics with either major. Which one is better?

I just do not understand what types of jobs Business Economics majors get. When I view lists of highest paid majors, Economics is usually on there, yet I do not know what jobs they get. Engineering = engineer, project manager, etc. What about Economics?

Accounting, on the other hand, is never on those lists.

    Help!

    Thanks.

  • Can I still major in Economics without high school classes in it?

I'm a high school student who is interested in majoring in Economics [business/managerial probably] but I've never taken an official Economics class in high school. My high school offers no AP Macro / Micro class and only offers an Economics class to seniors. However, I'm in the IB Programme, and we are excluded from taking that Economics class.

I don't want to drop the program though...

I fear that I will be discriminated when I apply for an Economics major at a good university since I have no high school experience.

My interest in Economics first stemmed from picking up The Economist magazine. From there, I researched and read more about Economics and thoroughly enjoyed it.

So can I still major in Economics considering my circumstances?

    Thanks.
