First let me tell you mine. The girl i loved once left me for another man after a big fight. I went to his house to get her back. I was prepared to die. Not only is he bigger than me. He has a full battalion of relatives and friends in there. And they all ganged up on me. Including I guess their family dog. I lost consciousness from the beating. When I woke up, I was on the garbage pile bleeding all over. The first thing I saw was her face, crying, and also black and blue, It turned out we fought the lynchmob together. We limped back home. From that day on, I'd proclaimed myself the living proof of love worth dying for.

I've been telling a friend that the second version "if worst comes to worst is the correct one" but he strongly disagrees because "worse comes to worst" is supposed to be the grammatically correct one. I try to explain that with idiomatic expressions, grammar is not always necessarily followed. But I have some doubts myself so will you please help me?
