  • If someone is subpoenaed, do they have to actually say anything?

Case in point: Suppose someone is arrested by the police and they exercise their right to remain silent. They are then subpoenaed to appear at a trial or civil case. Can they still choose to remain silent, or would they be guilty of contempt by doing so?

  • What rights do you have with Private Investigators?

Suppose someone, for whatever reason, hired a PI to investigate what I'm up to. If I found out about it, and they didn't have a warrant to carry out surveillance on me, is there anything they could be charged with? Could you accuse them of harassment or stalking, for instance? What chances would such a case have?

  • Can you be charged with resisting citizen's arrest?

Suppose I am wanted for a crime, skipping bail, or somesuch. Someone other than a policeman- say a bail bondsman- sees me and attempts to arrest me. I ask to see their police ID, and of course they can't provide it. Believing myself to be the victim of a kidnapping, I fight back and run for it.

What consequences would someone get for something like this? Would, for instance, they be able to claim it was self-defence if the arresting person wasn't a police officer and they honestly thought they were under attack?

  • Just how easy is it to obtain a search warrant?

If the police want to get a warrant to search someone's home, tap their phone or something, how easy is it in practice for them to get one? Is it just a matter of saying "we think this guy's up to something" or do they already have to have evidence that something is going on?

  • What do Christians think of these Bible verses?

First- this is not intended to set off a flame war. I am genuinely

interested in what Christians think of the following verses.

"However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way". (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

As you approach a town to attack it, first offer its people terms for peace. If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labor. But if they refuse to make peace and prepare to fight, you must attack the town. When the LORD your God hands it over to you, kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that the LORD your God has given you. (Deuteronomy 20:10-14)

If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her. (Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NLT)

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

And so on. You can find more at www.evilbible.com

Obviously, these passages and others detail some pretty nasty practices. I've often wondered- how many Christians knew about these passages? And if you do, do you accept them? Or if not, how do you rationalise them?

  • Christians: What did Jesus's death actually achieve?

I know they say he died to "save us from our sins", but people still sin, and according to the Bible, they still go to hell for it. What did it actually do? Who did he save?

  • How could one ignore the launch window problem?

If a spaceship was launched outside a launch window for its destination, but had a powerful enough engine, could it just accelerate in the direction of its target and eventually overcome the momentum it had when leaving Earth?

Yes, I know this would take such an insanely huge amount of fuel that you'd probably never get it off the ground, but is there any other reason why it would not work?

  • Maths problem- this doesn't make sense?

    The two equations I have are 9x^2 + 25y^2=169 (nine x squared plus 25 y squared = 169) and x^2+y^2+28x-23y=152.

I have to prove they touch at (4,-1) and no where else. The first part (that they meet at that point) is easy enough, but what about the second bit?

  • If the earth was 1km closer to the sun...?

I've heard a lot of people saying that it would be fried if this was the case. I'm pretty sure this is false, but I'd like a definitive answer.

  • Avoiding the Launch Window Problem?

If a spaceship with a powerful enough drive was launched outside a launch window, couldn't it just accelerate in the direction it needed to go in and cancel out its orbital velocity?

I admit this would probably take a crap-load of fuel to do wih current technology.
