A busy mother with a wonderful husband and three fantastic kids We share our life with many animals - 2 dogs, 3 cats, 3 turtles, a rabbit, 1 blue tongue lizard, a aviary of native finches and numerous fish. Remember to 'THINK OUTSIDE THE BAG (OR TIN) if you want to feed your pets a healthy and species appropriate diet!!. "You know, the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit the views, which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering." — Dr. Who

  • Red velvet cupcakes with the colouring?

Has anyone made these without the red colouring? And if so, how do they look?

I'm a bit concerned about them looking muddy without the colouring but I don't really like the idea of adding that much red if I don't need to.

  • What is a Stepfather's Breeze?

A man I work with uses the phrase "a Stepfather's Breeze" but when I asked him what it actually meant he had no idea :))

Has anyone heard of the phrase and if so can you explain its meaning and/or origins?

    Thanks

  • Question for your teenage self?

My 18 year old daughter is dating a guy that everyone in our family thinks is an absolute wrong choice for her. Not just immediate family - I'm talking aunts, uncles, grandparents and her friends etc.

He speaks down to her, uses and goes through her 'phone, says really bitchy things and then claims it's a 'joke' and (in my opinion) bullies her by being passive aggressive and sulky.

She was recently hospitalised with severe abdominal pain and he thought it would be fun to poke her belly to 'test' if the morphine and oxycodone was working yet - yes! the pain was that bad ): They broke up yesterday after he objected to being told how unsupportive he had been while she was ill but he now seems to have convinced her to give him another shot. They had a screaming fight and he damaged our front door through slamming and/or hitting it but now it is all supposed to be fine :(

We have tried to be as supportive of her as we can but I think the horrendous peer bullying that she has been through has left her vulnerable to this type of control. My major concern is that through his controlling and manipulative behaviour he is alienating her from her support network (both friends and family). My friends that I have seen date men who exhibited these behaviours have ended up in very abusive relationships.

Please, can anyone give me some advice on how to help her to see that she deserves better than this?

  • Sweet or Savoury? What do you prefer?

I really don't get this chocolate thing that people seem to have. I enjoy the odd piece of dark chocolate, the occasional snickers and the rocky road tree I make at Christmas but I don't get this daily 'need' that people talk about. I'd rather cashews or a triple cream brie. What about you?

  • judgment day? what are people doing now?

If there is anyone here who gave away all their belongings in anticipation of the Rapture, what are you doing now?

Did people give the goods back or are you having to rely on the charity of the people who didn't believe and kept their stuff??

One of my kids was asking about it the other day and as I don't know anyone who believed the end was nigh I thought I'd ask here.

  • Not just a raw 'meat' diet! What do you feed your dogs?

I have seen several questions and many answers in regards to a raw meat diet - not to mention the multitude of web sites sponsored by pet food companies that perpetuate this erroneous term, usually in order to stress the 'dangers'.

A well balanced raw diet is NOT just meat but a combination of whole prey, muscle meat, organs, meaty joints and various edible bones (usually covered in meat). Some people choose to add some vegetable scraps as well but many don't.

My dogs and cats eat chicken, beef, lamb, pork, goat, kangaroo, turkey, rabbit and fish (fresh or tinned) and the only bones they don't get are the weight bearing bones from the beef or cut ones like soup or chop bones.

They get liver and kidney each week and brains once or twice a month. Other offal is quite hard to get in Australia unless you can get it straight from the source.

As you can see, this is hardly an ALL meat diet. What do your pets eat?

  • cooking with evaporated milk?

How do you stop it from curdling?

My family loves creamy coconut curries and in an effort to reduce saturated fats I have been experimenting with using evaporated skim milk and coconut essence instead of coconut cream. The only trouble is that it often curdles and looks revolting.

I've tried mixing the milk with cornflour before adding it as well as starting the sauce in a cold pan but at least half the time I end up with the sauce curdling.

Any tips or hints would be very much appreciated.
