  • Vegan recipes....I'm not sure if I really know what vegan is?

I have a friend who is Vegan, and I'm not sure I quite understand what a Vegan excludes in their diet. Her birthday is coming up, and her family has asked me to bake her a birthday cake...please, I need a good, tried and true recipe!

Also, any info on Vegan diet would be appreciated.

    Thanks!!

  • Suggestions for wine pairings for a special dinner?

I need two wines...one for appetizer thru main course and another for dessert. Following is my menu:

    appetizer

    crab stuffed mushroom

    with artichoke croustades

    soup/salad

    lobster bisque

    baby spinach/butter lettuce/strawberry salad

with candied pecans and a peach balsamic vinaigrette

    main course

beef tenderloin and herb crusted roasted potatoes

    dessert

    lemon pudding flan

    with white chocolate curls

I wouldn't be adverse to a nice liqueur in place of a wine for dessert, so long as it pairs well with the main wine. Help!!!

PS any suggestions on the menu?

  • Is there anything you can add to this menu?

I am planning a picnic for the first weekend in November. I've chosen the following menu.

Butternut Squash Soap served in mini pumpkins

    Baked Ham and Cheese Pie

    Tomato Tarts

Broiled Apples served with walnut-pecan crunch

Fall Leaves Salad with warmed honey vinaigrette dressing

Pear-Cranberry Tarts with warmed custard sauce

    Apple Cider

Is there anything that can be added to make it more autumn-ish? OH!! LOL....maybe I should explain the fall leaves salad....its a leafy salad made with red leaf lettuce, arugula, oakleaf and radicchio, radishes, red, yellow and orange peppers, and baby bibb lettuce for contrast.

  • Pertaining to women and philosophy.......?

Though I know that there have been, and continue to be, women who have gained notoriety in the area of philosophy, they seem to be few and far between.

Could this perhaps be because of the emotional nature of women? Now, before you rant, what I mean is...women are taught that their emotional nature is acceptable, and often are given leeway because they are traditionally seen as emotional creatures.

So, if the gender roles that persist allow women to learn to use their emotions first, rather than use logic and reason first, does this make philosophy more difficult for women to study?

  • The validity (containing premises from which the conclusion may logically be derived) of the following?

There is no calamity greater than lavish desires.

There is no greater guilt than discontentment.

And there is not greater disaster than greed.

From the deepest desires often come the deadliest hate.

And what is the root of the unwholesome? Greed is a root of the unwholesome; hate is a root of the unwholesome; delusion is a root of the unwholesome. This is called the root of the unwholesome.

For greed all nature is too little.

Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.

Please, if you cannot disregard the source of the statements, then do not answer.

Do you want validation of your own thoughts/ideas? Are you looking for a differing opinion? Are you idly curious? Do you truly want an answer?

  • The problem with knowledge...read on please?

For many here, as Taiwan Teachers question points out, knowledge is an illusion. But, what is acquired through study, if not knowledge? Is it simply that our knowledge is incomplete, and therefor seems illusory?

  • what, really, is philosophy?

These are the typical answers one receives when asking the question:

Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline.

Investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods. A system of thought based on or involving such inquiry

Philosophy is based on rational argument and appeal to facts.

Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, truth, beauty, law, justice, validity, mind, and language.

Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, truth, beauty, law, justice, validity, mind, and language.

According to this more ancient conception, philosophy seeks to know what is true ...

The goal of philosophy is to address the “big questions” which do not fall into other disciplines: how we should act (ethics), what exists (metaphysics), how we know what we know (epistemology), and how we should reason (logic). Originating from Greek, the word philosophy means “love of wisdom.”

What I am asking is not this...what I am asking IS this: is philosophy more than its definition? Must philosophy be spewed out according to the thoughts of "philosophers"?

  • Asking for opinions on the current trend to go "green"?

Yes, first of all, I know this is philosophy, and this is NOT a philosophical question, per se. However, I also happen to think that philosophers will look at this with a decidedly non-scientific POV.

Undoubtedly scientists, environmentalists, and others have data that verifies the benefits of green technologies. With trends also leaning to conservation efforts, reduction in foreign oil, bio fuels, recycling, etc...what I am trying to get opinions on is this: Are these efforts really a viable means of reducing the harm we do to our environment, or are they another way for humanity to assuage their guilt? (I am not speaking of guilt in the biblical sense)
