Culture of One

That's pretty much it. What do you say when someone's opening line is "Are you married?" I don't really feel like sharing my marital status with someone who can't even be bothered to come close enough to see my ring finger. I have literally had people on the other side of the street ask me this. What do you say? Ignore? None of your business? Say "thank you" as though they had just complimented you and leave them with a confused look? Actually that last one sounds good. Any ideas?

My new husband's sister often invites us to church with her family when we visit. She knows he is an atheist, and I haven't actually discussed with her the fact that I'm a Buddhist. I feel bad turning her down, and I know my brother-in-law, who is very devout, will eventually ask us as well. We need a reply that is a refusal but still warm, without inciting a religious discussion right there, something that will get us out of the discussion until a later time when we can talk religion without their kids being there. (Because I think I have to ask them about what kind of religious discussion they're okay with me having in front of their kids.)
