  • AS Physics - Quantifying Uncertainties?

Does anyone know of any websites or useful info that could help me with my AS physics, I am really stuck on quantifying uncertainties. At first I thought it seemed easy but apparently not after getting back my work and the uncertainties I tried to calculate being wrong; how on earth are you meant to estimate the uncertainty and everything?

I would be so grateful if anyone could help me.

    Thanks in advance. :)

  • Do I confront him or just leave it?

So there's this guy.. I've known him for about a year and have liked him from a distance but never got the courage to go up and talk to him until about 2 months ago. He is in the year below which makes it a little but awkward but I thought I'd try and work past that when I realised I really liked him. So we started talking on facebook, I spoke to him about 3 or 4 times and then asked for his number. He gave it to me willingly and we do still text occasionally but it's always me that has to initiate the conversations. I've got quite bored of doing this to be honest, and also kind of worried that he just doesn't want to talk. He does seem friendly and responsive in the conversations but will sometimes not reply to messages if I send them too late or whatever. There are a few times when he's just completely ignored my text altogether. I realised that he probably wasn't interested, and for that reason, I'd started to just think 'what's the point?' and was beginning to get over him when I then found out from a friend that he had been spreading rumours about me liking him. I guess I may have given him subtle hints that I liked him, for example by just starting conversations or whatever, but anyway I was a bit annoyed that he had just assumed that and told people anyway without even having any confirmation from me that I actually did.

As I've got to know him better, I've noticed that he just seems to be desperate for popularity (e.g. publicly being rude to his close (less popular) friends on facebook and sucking up to the more popular people, and generally boasting if he gets any attention from girls). I'm just a bit confused about why he would tell everyone.. Some friends have suggested that maybe he's trying to show off to his friends that an older girl likes him (e.g. using me to boost his own reputation) in which case, it will just make me like him less OR he's simply telling people just to embarrass me as he clearly doesn't like me back. To be honest I doubt the first one is true because I'm not exactly 'popular' myself.. I have friends, I just don't go to the parties every weekend and get drunk/get off with people - that's generally the type of people who are considered 'popular' at our school.

So basically, do I confront him, telling him I've never liked him and I don't know where he got that idea from (knock his ego a bit - which seems necessary as he's become increasingly arrogant lately) or just leave it completely, delete his number and don't acknowledge him when I see him in person?

Please help! Thanks.. apologies for the long story.

  • Stereo mix on Windows 7?

    Hiya,

I went to record something using the stereo mix for the first time today on my Windows 7 computer, only to realise that there is no option on there for stereo mix anymore. I have googled it and people have suggested clicking on the option to 'show hidden devices'. However, when I did this there was still no stereo mix option appearing in the recording section of the sound sector (control panel).

I tried downloading some software that would let me record stuff without the stereo mix and it worked, but there was a limit of how much time I could record things for, and to get rid of the limit I would have to pay over £90.

So could anyone tell me if there is any way I can get the stereo mix option to reappear? would uninstalling and reinstalling a driver work or is this risky? if this is what I need to do then please tell me how to.

    Thanks :)

  • Maths Simultaneous Equation?

    Hey,

I've been working on this question for at least half an hour now, and am finding it impossible. I have to solve the simultaneous equation of x^2+y^2=80 and 3x+y=20.

From my working out, I got:

    x^2+y^2=80 and y=20-3x

    then square all of B to give you: y^2 = (-3x+20)^2 = (-3x+20)(-3x+20) = 9x^2-120+400

    rewrite A with y^2 eliminated: 12x^2-120x+380

Factorise: and this is where I get stuck.

I have been told the answers are: (8,-4) and (4,8) but I really don't understand how the person got this answer. Could someone please help me with the workings out. How wrong have I gone with what I've worked out so far? Please help me, I've been stuck for ages and it's in for tomorrow :(

    thanks

  • Exercise bike reading - is this realistic?

    Heya :)

Recently, I have started doing exercise everyday for 35 minutes on the exercise bike. Today, I spend roughly 36 minutes on it. It said that I had burnt 500 calories, and 'cycled' 20km. I acknowledged that I had it on a very low setting, because I don't want to build up mu leg muscles, I just need some cardio exercises to do. My dad doesn't believe that my exercise bike reading is accurate, he reckons I could never do 20km in 35 minutes. Most of the time, my speed was between 36-41km/h.

I'm not saying that he is right or wrong, the reading may well have been inaccurate, I would just like someone else's opinion on the matter.. do you think this is accurate or inaccurate?

    Thanks for your time :)

  • Pottermore Early Access?

    Hi,

Just wondering, after people have received their welcome email how long are they allowed to stay on it for during the test period, or is it unlimited?

Because surely if people got their welcome emails the day after the registrations finished, and were able to stay on the entire test period, this would be hugely unfair on people who are finally let in on the last day before it opens to everyone. I mean, why go to the effort of getting up at 3am, refreshing the page for half an hour, going through the stress of registering before you get blocked out, if you are going to get in a day before it opens to everyone? I just don't really see that logic in that.

Also, what percentage of people still haven't received their welcome emails? Most of my friends who registered have access now and I'm still waiting for my welcome email. I check maybe 3 or 4 times a day and I'm still waiting :L hopefully it will come soon but I'm just starting to worry because everyone I know has got theirs now.. :/

    Thanks

  • To people who have already signed up at Pottermore....?

    I have two questions:

    1) If you haven't yet received your Welcome email, are you still able to sign in with your username and password or does it say the combination is wrong?

    2) Please go onto your emails and click the validation link. Now that you have clicked this link more than once, does it say this? 'Sorry, there was a problem with the registration process. Please try again.

Please create a new Pottermore account. This should only take a minute or so.'

Please help me, I am having some trouble starting up my account, and I would like to know if something has gone wrong with the registration process or whether I am just being paranoid like I always am. If you could answer these two questions, it would help me so much, to either know that i need to re-register tomorrow, or to put my mind at ease about whether I actually do have an account or not :p

    Thanks a bunch! :D

  • Trouble with Pottermore - Signing up?

    Hi,

I found the magical quill today and signed up to Pottermore. After just a few minutes, I checked my emails and I had received the email confirming my registration with a verification link so that I could activate my account. I clicked on the link and it asked for my password. I typed in what I thought was the right password but it said that it was incorrect. I tried it again and it said that it was incorrect again. I then clicked on 'Forgotten my password' and got an email saying that I could change my password through a link that it had sent me. I reset my password and I thought everything was all well and good. Then I tried to log in, and it said I had been blocked out for an hour because I had got my password wrong too many times, even though I had only entered it wrong twice (not 3 times).

I went back to my verification email and clicked through the link, only to this time find that it said there had been an error and I needed to make a new account.

So I did this whole process again, and exactly the same thing has happened. The registration period is now over for today and so I cannot make a new account like it tells me to.

Where am I going wrong? And are the accounts that I made definitely not viable? Because I don't want to have to spend all day tomorrow on my computer refreshing the screen like I did today and do the whole process again.

Also, is there any way that I can contact Pottermore itself to ask for help? I can't see a contact us link anywhere but I really need to speak to someone.

    Thanks.

  • Point of saturation of Sucrose solution?

I'm doing an investigation for school, and I need to find the point of saturation of sucrose in water at room temperature (roughly 25 degrees celsius). I've found the molar mass and all of this stuff to try and work it out but I keep getting ridiculous figures like 0.05m, which can't be right because we did an experiment with 1mole solution and that was not saturated. So i'm sort of confused.. if anyone could tell me what the point of saturation of sucrose in water is at 25 degrees celsius (in moles) is, that would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Veterinarian or Genetic Engineering Scientist?

    Hi,

I have two jobs in mind that I would love to do, but I'm really not sure which one I would prefer to go into. I love animals and I've wanted to be a vet for a long time, but recently, I've also been very interested in biology, and genetics in particular. I would like to go into the genetic engineering science type of career, but I can't decide which would be better. I am in the process of doing my GCSEs at the moment, and I have work experience soon. It will be easier to go to vet's for work experience because I do not know any labs nearby, but that does not mean that I wouldn't like to become a scientist. I am pretty sure that I will do Biology, Chemisty, and Maths or Physics at A level, but once I have qualifications I would be able to be a vet or a scientist, so this does not help my decision.

What pros and cons are there of each job? If you have a career in one of these two areas, please tell me what you love about the job, what you don't like so much, what qualifications you have, and what kind of thing you do at work (clearly if you are a vet you look after animals but I was thinking more about the genetic scientist when I asked what kind of thing you do at work).

I need help and some advice on what would be better to pick..

    Thanks :)

  • Biology question: What would happen if....?

If you took the nucleus out of human egg cell, and inserted the nucleus from a male body cell or a sperm cell (not sure which one would be needed), could you fertilise this with normal sperm and end up with a baby? Or is a female sex cell nucleus essential to creating a healthy baby?

If this process does work, has it been used before to give gay men a baby which is genetically half of each parent? Could this also work with 1 male + 1 female couples who can't have children because one of them has a problem with their sexual organs? I mean, by either putting the female's body cell nucleus into another woman's empty egg cell, or by putting the male's body cell nucleus into another man's sperm cell (not sure about the sperm cell because they are a lot smaller..), surely this could work?...

Sorry about all the questions.. I just love genetics and this kind of thing so I'm curious :)

  • What does PCT logo mean on perfume box?

    This is the logo: http://www.seeklogo.com/images/P/pct_Rusia_Standar...

I have a feeling it may be Russian?

  • What grade pieces should a grade 4 flautist be able to sight read?

I am doing taking my grade 4 flute exam in a few days, and I'm really worried. Although I'm confident that my pieces and scales/arpeggios are good enough to get at least a pass, I'm not so confident about my sight reading. I'm awful at keeping to the rhythm and remembering the key signature under pressure. I would like to practice my sight reading to improve it a bit, but I have no idea what sort of pieces I should try to sight read.

Under the ABRSM, what grade pieces will they get you to play for your sight reading in the grade 4 exam (flute)?

    Thanks :)

  • Ripping DVDs Onto iPod?

    Hi

I have just downloaded and used a program to rip a DVD onto my iPod, and the ripping process has now finished, but instead of being left with a 2 hour long MPG4 file to put straight on my iPod, it has ripped it in the small parts like it was on the DVD, and the small parts only last about 20 seconds :/

Anyone know what I'm meant to do with these so that they will sort of merge into one part so that I can watch it easily on my iPod?

And anyone had the same thing happen to them when they tried ripping a DVD to their iPod? :S

    Thanks :)
