  • UK England only - tax on repaying a loan?

I've recently received an inheritance & would like to buy my a home of his own so he doesn't have to rent anymore. It would take him 30 years to pay back the capital without any interest, though given my age I expect to be dead before then.

What's the tax position on repaying capital only?

  • insulation?

Outside beneath our front window is a section of upvc weatherboarding. Thie was fitted about 25 years ago & I suspect it conceals minimal if any insulation. On the inside of this is the living room radiator mounted on plasterboard supported by wooden battens. There is no solid structure, probably just a 7" hollow. I want to fill the space with insulation. Is this likely to cause any problems e.g. with condensation? If so how is this best overcome?

  • Printer problems?

I rarely use my printer. Typically a new one lasts about 13 months before it stops working. Replacing the ink cartridge doesn t help. ink cartridges cost more than the printer, so I m reluctant to keep wasting my money on these. A shop assistant has advised me to get a laser printer rather than an inkjet as they use powder rather than liquid ink & so they won t deteriorate if left unused for long periods.

Has anyone else had the same problem & what solution would you recommend?

  • How do you get the centre brake light off a Nissan Note?

My 60 reg Nissan Note is leaking water from around the centre rear brakelight. I've tried unbolting it but it still won't come loose. The light just bends if you try to lever it. I don't want to damage either the light or the tailgate.

    Any suggestions?

I will need to replace my car's tyres in a few weeks. I have been offered 2 brands Maragoni & Capitol at the same price. They both have similar grip & economy characteristics. I've never heard of either brand before. Is there a way of telling which would last longest?

  • What major advances in understanding have been made by amateurs?

And what was the establishment response to their work?

By "amateurs" here I mean people not actually employed in the field to which the contributed. For example Einstein was a civil servant, Charles Darwin was not the official "scientist" on board the Beagle. The list goes on, for example doctors rejected the idea that they should wash their hands between examining patients but I don't know who first suggested the idea.

    a) What other examples can you think of where amateurs made major contributions to our understanding; b) What was the initial establishment reaction and c) How long did it take for their ideas to become accepted?

  • Are these estate agents now committing a criminal act?

My son's house was let via N of Exeter under a guaranteed rental scheme. All appeared to go well until July this year when he notified them that he didn't wish to renew their contract when it expires on 29 September. Under 15.4 of the contract, initiated & signed by the agents, my son may keep the tenant & dispense with the agent & he instructed them under that clause. The woman in the office screamed at him & refused to accept his written notification. On 15 August they issued the tenant with 2 months notice in direct contradiction of my son's instruction.

Technically, the agents are tenants & the tenant their sub-tenant. As the agent's contract (which they have breached) expires before their notice to the tenant, they received rental for the period 29 Sept - 15 October, they will be technically occupying the property against my son's will from 29 September by virtue of the presence of the tenant & thus squatters which became a criminal act from 1 September this year.

Can we now use criminal law against the agents?

  • Why won't people hear that Darwin's "Origin of Species" isn't science?

I fully accept that publication of "Origin of Species" finally broke the stranglehold religion maintained over the freedom of thought necessary for modern science to evolve.

Whenever I point out on YA that Charles Darwin's paper doesn't meet the requirements of modern science I get loads of thumbs down & very angry responses.

Science requires theories to come from the unbiased examination & review of all evidence & to be subject to future modification in the light of evidence. We know that the theory of evolution predated Charles Darwin by at least 2 generations, his grandfather Erasmus Darwin being a famous exponent of the theory. Also in Charles's own days Huxley was a great exponent, but lacked any publishable evidence for the theory for many years after Charles's voyage on the Beagle. Charles himself didn't publish until it became clear Huxley was going to advance a paper, apparently with weaker evidence. Afterwards Huxley became the main populariser of the theory of evolution as "proven", a claim Charles Darwin never made.

So as theory predated evidence it doesn't meet the demands of unbiased scrutiny required of modern science, where theory must be based on evidence & not vice versa.

Also we know now that the variations Darwin observed in Galapagos are within the species, not new species. No proven "missing link" required by evolution has ever been found. Today we see loss of species at an unprecedented rate, where evolution would theorise the exact opposite.

Science has advanced to such a degree that we know many of Darwin's conclusions to be erroneous. Nevertheless it seems that many people refuse even to allow proper scientific questioning & debate of the theory as if it were some sort of Holy Grail without which all science would be lost.

As far as I'm concerned, creationism is similarly untrue.

Pointing out currently known weaknesses in Darwin's paper brings worse than religious wrath from pro-Darwin zealots.

What are they really afraid of?

  • How do I get rid of a rogue estate agent?

In September 2011 my son let his house via North... of Exeter. He chose their fullest (platinum) contract as he wanted freedom to attend to his wedding. Now he's married he wants to resume control. The agent's contract expires on 29 September. details from the contract are given below:

    15 Circumvention of Contract

15.1 The Landlord shall not enter into any Tenancy Agreement or contractual

commitment in respect of the Property with any Sub-Tenant of the Tenant who

has occupied the Property either during the Term or up to nine months after the

    Term of this Agreement.

15.2 In the event that the Landlord does enter into a Tenancy Agreement or contractual

commitment in contravention of the terms of clause 15.1 hereof then the Tenant

shall be entitled to claim compensation from the Landlord by way of liquidated

damages in a sum equivalent to six months Rent as defined in this Agreement.

15.3 Should the Landlord at the end of this contract wish to change over to either our

Gold, Silver or Bronze schemes, the Tenant will allow it provided that the Sub-

Tenant residing in the Property has vacated the Property at the end of this

    Agreement.

15.4 Should the Platinum contract not be renewed at the end of the Term then

Northwood may allow the Sub-Tenant to remain in the Property subject to an

Introduction Fee payable by the Landlord.

In July he instructed them in writing to implement 15.4, (keeping the tenant but ridding us of the agent). Although the agent admits their contract expires on 29 Sept, they have nevertheless issued the tenant with notice to quit on 15 October. Their correspondence indicates that despite legal notice served on them, they won't relinquish their hold as they think it wouldn't be in their interest to let us have "their" tenant. The tenant is quite adamant that she wishes to remain in her home.

Obviously we'll be changing the locks to keep the agents or their bailiffs out & I'll assume the agent's role & issue the tenant with a new rental agreement

It seems quite clear to me the woman partner at the agency is a complete psycho. What else can we do to ensure they never bother us or our tenant again?
