I crossed the line and became a Shellback in 1984. I am retired from the Military and I am a vet of 2 wars. I love American history and focus most my American history education on World War II and the wonderful vets that are our heroes of that era no mater what service or culture. God Bless them all. I 100 percent support cultural diversity and getting to know all cultures and their ways. I love my wife of 38 years, my children, grandchildren and America. Note:To those of you who have wanted to email me. I am sorry but I have had to learn the hard way on this issue. Thanks for your understanding.

  • Why has the author Washington Erving fallen out of favor with today's educated readers?

There are many classic writers from the 1800's still being read today but Erving is one of those writers you hear very little of today. I am not well educated on this and the reason for the question but I thought I had read years ago that his books on Washington, Mohamed, etc. fell out of favor because he did not check on the facts. Many educated institutions turned away his biographies because of misinformation that was not discovered till after his death. Is there any truth in this or did I read wrong?

I own a very old complete collection of his writings and I read many very old books all the time. Can I read his account on Washington's life and trust the writer or do I read it and take the story with a grain of salt? I will read the book either way. Thank you for any insight.

  • What is your favorite Philosophy quote or quotes?

The first one of my favorite two are: Which way did they go George, which way did they go?" This great quote from John Locke shows his dependance on his friend George. Lock was a heavy sleeper and when he first got up in the morning George was always there to point to Locke the direction he should go. Of special note is the fact that I never thought of the great American author, John Steinbeck as being a Locke fan till I read, "Of Mice and Men". Way to go George.

My second is: "Do not forget where ever you go there you are." The author of this quote is unknown because it goes back to the time of Rome and the saying, "All roads lead to room." As merchants traveled these many roads to Rome they always felt comfort in knowing that where ever they were on these roads they were always right there.

What is your favorite quote or quotes? Thanks for your time.

  • What do you hardcore Apple users think of ios7?

I am hard pressed to find any tech review of iOS 7 below 4 out of five stars but there is no doubt the public does not feel the same way. It does not take a rocket scientist to see the unhappy people on the net. I work in a computer tech environment and about seventy five percent of us own iPhones or an iPad and not one of us likes iOS 7. We all feel that this program would have never gotten past Steve Jobs desk if he were still there. I do not buy Jobs letting anything past his desk that is not beautiful or intuitive and in my opinion this iOS is not beautiful and requires way to much time to figure out, worse it looks like windows and Linux.

What can you hard core Apple users say to sell me on iOS 7? Why should I stay with Apple if they are going to start looking like Microsoft? Last what is happening to Apple's look?

  • A period history question from the movie Meet Me in St. Louis?

My wife and I just watched a period holiday movie titled, Meet Me in St. Louis. The movie takes place in 1903. In the movie during Halloween the mother gives the 5 year old daughter a bag of flour and tells her to throw the flour in peoples face after they answer the door. Along with that the neighborhood children proceed to build a huge fire in the middle of the streets with no adult supervision. I sort of get the barn fire thing as something more excepted back then because times were so different but I have no clue what throwing the flour in peoples face is all about. I have thought and rethought this and have come up with no ideas. I understand why such a tradition is no longer practiced as there would be many upset adults by today's standards. Is there anyone out there that understands the meaning of this flour throwing? Thank you for your time.

  • What is a good Wagner opera to start with?

I am a seasoned classical music fan (I am not a music major) but I have never gotten into opera. However, I have been indulging my German roots with some Wagner overtures and preludes that do involve some operatic singing and I find I like everything, including all the singing. I now think I am ready for a full scale Wagner opera. What would be a good start for a person like me? Amazon has some wonderful mp3 deals. In fact his complete Ring opera is for about eight dollars but I am not ready for a 15 hour opera. However I am very open to some good ideas for a opera that completes in a more reasonable time. Thank you for your time.

  • A question for those from Australia.?

I have noticed that on your flag all the stars in the southern cross are seven pointed but one. The one that is not seven pointed has five points. I am going to take a stab as to why that is. Most the stars that make up the southern cross are star clusters and the reason for the seven points and the five pointed star on your flag represents a single lone star. Am I even close?

  • Could early man have seen craters on the moon?

Seeing how the moon is moving away from the earth at a rate of one and a half inches a year and a pair of seven power binoculars can see the more pronounced craters, then could it not be assumed that early man a million years ago or even later could have seen the moons craters with his own eyes?

  • Would you paint a 2003 Dodge Dakota pick up truck with 121,300 miles?

I love my 2003 Dodge Dakota pick up. I have never had any problems with this truck. But it's dark blue paint has separated from the top coat on the hood and the cab top. I mean it is really bad. I have no desire to get a new truck because I like this one and fear I could end up with a lemon if I did get a new one. I have 121,300 miles on it and it is the small V8. It will cost me between 2500 to 3000 dollars to paint. Would any of you spend this kind of money on a truck with this many miles on it? To me it would be worth it if I could get another 100,000 miles out of it. Your thoughts please. Thank you.

  • Name a movie or movies that the other actor out performed the main actor or actors?

    My choices

    1. Alec Genus, number 1 because his performance was so stellar in, A Bridge Over The River Kuwi that he made William Holden look like he needed acting lessons.

    2. Val Kilmer in Tombstone. Val outshines everyone in this movie but not nearly as bright as Alec.

    3. Kevin Spacey in, The Usual Suspects. Poor Kevin is way down the acting list but gets a well deserved Academy Award for a stunning performance. Kevin is not higher in this list because everyone was outstanding in this masterpiece. No one looked like they needed acting lessons it is just that Kevin's performance was better.

    4. Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs. Yes everyone is great in this movie but let's face it Anthony stole this show.

    5. Madeline Kahn in, What's Up Doc? She stole this movie right out from Barbara Streisand's nose, if that is at all possible. She made me laugh so hard my rib cage hurt.

    What are your choices?

  • For you people on manners, what is your take on proper cell phone use?

At this moment I am totally frustrated. While at the store my wife and I could not focus on our shopping because everyone around us was talking out loud on their smart phones. Just ten years ago such people would have been viewed as nuts. I am bothered by how we, even in polite soscity, have let these phones take over our lives. Why do churches and public libraries have to tell us to turn them off? I will not get into the idiots who use them and drive. A good example of this gadget take over is my younger sister who was taken back by my no cell phone use at the supper table as she was as bad as my young nice at putting it away. Again ten years ago she would have been on my side and forced my nice to put away her phone too.

My question is do those of you who pride yourselves on your manners see this getting better or getting worse? Do you agree with this mutation to let these gadgets take over our lives or do we simply have no choice in the matter? Am I the werd one?
