  • How about a Scroll Bar....?

...for the left hand list of category headings? I hate having to scroll the whole page just to move up and down the list.

And on another thing somebody else mentioned: I rarely answer q.s now as I don't see the point of being unable to answer American ones and there's no way of distinguishing UK ones (often).

  • Anybody help with Google Maps?

Until recently, I was running Windows 7 32-bit (upgrade from Vista) and IE9, and Google maps was fine.

Then I went on a new machine to straight W7 64-bit, which 'kindly' (though I didn't really want it) upgraded me to IE 11.

Now, when I open Maps, the start page shows the NW European area for a couple of seconds, then whites out. Satellite view is fine and the map view shows in the small thumbnail in the LH corner, but not on the full screen. Other sites have suggested checking hardware acceleration, for example, but nothing works.

Is this Google, IE or something else? Anybody cracked it?

  • Can I sort MS updates?

I am running Windows 7 at 64-bit. When I get MS Updates and they send Office updates, I have downloaded the 64-bit ones, but ignored the 32-bit ones.

Firstly, is there any technical reason why I need to download the 32s? If I don't need them, is there any way I can stop them keep on regularly arriving, or have I just got to tolerating them?

    TIA

  • Any problems transferring a HDD?

I'm hoping to build a new PC and intend having the basic machine running with W7 64-bit. What I'd like to do then to save time - and I'd like the extra HDD space anyway - is to install the HDD from the previous machine (configured as a slave) to access all my personal files.

    1. Are there generally any pitfalls to doing this?

That slave HDD will also have on it the OS of the previous machine (actually a W7 32-bit upgrade from Vista), so

    2. Will this OS presence have any nasty effect when the slave HDD is installed?

    3. Can I remove it by just deleting the Windows folder on that drive, leaving only the personal folders/files, or is there more to it than that?

    TIA

  • Can any French speaker or F. language expert help?

Too complicated to go into why, but the q. is: what is the nearest spelling in French for an imaginary word which in English sounds like "a burnt oil"? I know there is no pure "oi" sound in F., but anything near?

  • Does anybody know why....?

...ordinary criminals (UK) serve half the imposed sentence with good behaviour, but rich, powerful people, such as MPs who fiddle expenses, only serve a quarter of their sentences?

  • Does anybody else think this is a reasonable idea?

I go on Answers to a page headed "Yahoo Answers UK and Ireland". I do my best to help out answering questions, but I get SICK of discovering that my efforts are rubbished because it turns out the q. comes from an American. As Yahoo either won't or can't separate US and UK questions, but post them all to UK & Ireland, my suggestion is that at the end of a question , askers add, appropriately, [US] or [UK].

Anybody can then answer the q. if they want/feel competent to do so, and some of us can be helped not to inadvertently put our feet in it!

  • Re-installing OS: possible problem?

I have a spare PC in which I think the HDD may be knackered. I don't want to put this PC online, if it can be avoided.

If I replace the HDD with a new one, then re-install the XP OS via disc, will it stop working after 30 days (or whatever) if I don't re-register it?

Is there a way of registering without going online?

    TIA for any help.

  • Can I fit a firewire connection.....?

We have a Dell Inspiron 15 (Don't bother with the rubbishing comments!) which doesn't have a firewire connection. (My fault for not ordering it).

It has only USB 2s, ethernet and card reader slot.

Is there any way we can connect a firewire to import videos from a videocam (Canon MVX300)? It will import stills as short bursts of video, but won't do a five minute movie.

Am I right that it can't do this if it hasn't got the dedicated board, because it's a totally different protocol?

  • If I get a violation for 'chatting', does that make me an unsuitable person?

I reported an answer for abuse: a student had asked for help with homework and some pleasant guy had made a sexual suggestion as a reply. In spite of my report, his answer is still there.

So has it not been removed because *I* got a violation? Even if I'm not a *reliable person*, can't the moderators see for themselves what this guy is doing?

  • Is there anybody in the UK who, like me, is.....?

totally hacked off with the way the BBC WASTES our licence money by continually sending people like Huw Edwards to other countries (first class, no doubt) to be an anchor for the news? All the instances recently have shown him doing NOTHING but presenting reports by the local editors (who could easily have anchored) and asking a few questions. Three minutes of his time costs us literally hundreds of pounds, possibly thousands, and NONE of it was something that couldn't equally well have been done from a London studio.

The licence payers of the UK are SO ripped off by the Beeb!

  • Anybody any ideas about this one, please? 3 puters:On laptop1 I can get emails using OE, connect to 2 web-...?

sites I run using an FTP programme and connect to the internet using IE.On laptop2 I can connect to the internet using IE. (It's not configured to do the other 2 things). On the desktop I can get ordinary emails and use FTP, but since a Sat. morning 2 weeks ago, I can get no connection to the internet.

All three puters connect thro' a wireless router;the fact that some working is achieved, means I can't imagine it's the connection in any respect, though I sometimes get difficulties all over around 4 or 5pm when people get home from school/work..

I have cleaned out caches, restored to a month back which did not help, reinstalled SP2, found two "Objects" damaged so downloaded replacements and dropped 'em onto the harddrive. I have checked all the connection parameters (Tools(Tools > Internet Options) against laptop1 so they are the same, tried it with the firewall turned off, tried to reinstall IE6 (the version I use)gone through"Page Cannot Be Displayed" page notes. No go! What now?

...(I've only just found out) that if you answer a question about a donkey, if you use the correct word for it, the Yahoo prog. automatically changes it to *** !

The Americans have a lot to answer for in mangling the English language. Will I get away with using a good old - fashioned word like ****, I wonder?

  • Does anybody else "lose" e-mails?

On several occasions over months, when I open OE to get my e-mails, they come in and the little info bar in the bottom RH corner tells me how many messages. When I look at the list ther's one missing. It just happened (hence this q.) - " 1 new Message", but in the list, no message. And the point is, it's not in the Deleted folder. I have quite a few blocked senders, but these normally go into 'Deleted', but not on these occasions. Anybody know if there's somewhere else they could be going?

  • What home video format is best?

I want to convert all home videos to the same format (and have a programme to do it). Which is the best format for high quality reproduction and/or flexibility (PC viewing and writing to DVD): .mov, .avi, .wmv, .mpg, mpg2/3/4?
