When will Snowden and Manning condemn Trump's sharing secrets with Russia?
Their silence on this urgent matter of High Treason makes me worried...
5 AntwortenPoliticsvor 4 JahrenWhy do cops say "high rate of speed" instead of "fast"?
Alright, so "vehicle" may be more correct than "car", for example, because it also includes "truck" and "van". etc. But why use four words "high rate of speed" instead of one: "fast"?
NYPD just tweeted:
Richard Rojas, 26 y/o of the #Bronx (driver) drove at a high rate of speed. 22 injured (4 critical) and one person is deceased. #TimesSquare
— NYPD NEWS (@NYPDnews) May 18, 2017
And I've heard the same term used by police in traffic courts... Why?
10 AntwortenLaw Enforcement & Policevor 4 JahrenIs there a name for the fallacy of pretending, an opponent's hyperbole/joke is serious and "debunking" it?
For example, somebody says: "She is so stupid, she'd drown if caught in the rain," -- and is told, that the opponent has seen the subject in the rain, which she survived without a trouble.
For another example, one would say: "I told you this a million times!" -- and hear back, that it is impossible, because it would take 114 years of hourly repetitions to achieve the 1,000,000 mark.
It is almost like the "STRAW MAN" fallacy, but not quite... Is there a name for it already? Thanks!

I don't know, how a free country can limit, what residents wear (nor not wear), but Switzerland and France now ban certain kinds of "Islamic" clothing:

Do American Illiberals still clamor for the US to become "more like Europe"?
6 AntwortenPoliticsvor 5 JahrenDoes Racism really explain victims' failures?
Jews have been persecuted in Europe for centuries. Even in the US today there are plenty of anti-Semites.
Asians have also suffered from it in the US -- and continue to. Bruce Lee's biopic has some illuminating details.
And yet, both the Jews and the Asians are, on average, AHEAD of Whites in our society. So much so, Asian college-applicants are advised to leave the "race" question unmarked on their applications -- to avoid the race-penalty imposed by the racist admission-boards on the Asians:

Is it really racism, that is holding back African Americans?
Other - Politics & Governmentvor 5 JahrenWas the Civil Rights legislation of the 60-ies a success?
It certainly seems like Blacks are even worse off than they were (relative to Whites) and the inter-racial strife more vicious than before.
But I was not around in the 50-60ies...
Did we get any long-term improvement in exchange for surrendering certain freedoms -- like freedom of (not-)association -- back then, or was it all for nought?

Will she disavow his support? Will she be ASKED to disavow it, the way Donald Trump was asked about David Duke's "endorsement"?
5 AntwortenPoliticsvor 5 JahrenIs the "please don't hate" any more sensible, than "please don't love"?
We love (what we consider) good and hate (what we consider) evil.
Yet, it seems, some people implore others to "stop being a hater" of ANYTHING -- as if ANY kind of hatred is automatically wrong.
What's wrong with hating per se? Is there no evil in the world, in their opinion, that can -- and SHOULD -- be despised?

USDA are soliciting bids for submachine guns:

Why do they -- Department of AGRICULTURE (!!) need weapons at all? And, if they do, why do they need the 30-round capacity, that's illegal in many (Progressive) states and towns?

Was an American CEO ever fired because he was a homosexual? In the last 50 years?
Because if not, then Mr. Sullivan's "no better" is too soft a condemnation -- "much worse" would seem appropriate...

8 AntwortenPoliticsvor 7 JahrenWhy don't "peace loving people" protest Russian invasion en masse?
Why did Saddam Hussein had so much support among peace-loving people world-wide, who braved police and weather to protest American invasion in 2003, but Ukraine -- being invaded in 2014 -- is, largely, on her own?
Saddam Hussein was a threat to neighbors and a supporter of terrorism... Nothing of the kind can be said about Ukraine's new government. So, if it was wrong for Bush to invade Iraq to facilitate a regime-change, why is it Ok for Putin to invade Ukraine and annex bits and pieces of the country -- wherever ethnic Russians happen to live?
7 AntwortenPoliticsvor 7 JahrenWith Obama representing poor and downtrodden, is it any wonder, we have the most of them in years?
<<
The official poverty rate in the United States, defined as lacking resources for life's basic needs, was 19% in 1964. It had fallen to 12.1% by 1969, the year Johnson left office. Last year, it stood at 15%, only a modest decline from the launch of his anti-poverty campaign. Today, about 50 million Americans, including 13 million children, live below the poverty line — in 2012 set at $23,492 for a family of four.

You are already on the ground screaming and the ahole, who punched you -- to score points among his "friends" -- is already laughing and preparing to walk away with your mobile phone.
Are you allowed to pull out your weapon and order him to stop -- and shoot, if he tries to punch you again?
Or will that lead you to a lengthy court-battles and living the rest of your life in infamy as a racist willing to kill an unprivileged youth over something so trivial as a piece of electronics?
7 AntwortenPoliticsvor 7 JahrenIf leaving a car in a Black 'hood was considered racist in the 90ies, what of walking with an Apple device?
In the 90ies we were told, that leaving a decent car parked unattended is racist -- especially, if the vehicle is unlocked. Because it seduces the criminals -- who were and remain disproportionately Black -- to steal it.
Does the same rule apply today to walking around with an Apple device?
<<
The NYPD says that in 2012, nearly 20 percent of all burglaries, robberies and grand larcenies involved apple products. In total almost 16,000 apple items were stolen. That is 14 percent of all the crime in the city.
