Profs still lecture on blackboards, whiteboards, or just talk. But to what extent do profs use campus email to send materials and messages to students and have students send submissions and questions back? To what extent do profs use campus web sites for the same.

Dear friends: Like many of yourselves, I try to help students by answering their questions. In this question, it comes down to: What are they to know, and how are they to know it? In particular, what does a test grader want to see:

I read "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by Stieg Larsen. In the story, some one shoots at protagonist Blomquist and grazes his head. It comes out later that the person was using hunting ammunition. The author explains that even military ammunition is not so deadly as hunting ammunition, because the aim is to incapacitate.

Years earlier, in a magazine article by G. Gordon Liddy, he wrote that homeowners who want to protect their homes with firearms should choose ammunition carefully. He wrote that target shooting ammunition was "paper cutters." He advocated ammunition that I do not remember.

I do not plan on owning a gun in the near (or far) future. Would some expert answer my literary queries?

We read in history of Romans called Quintus, Sextus, Septimius, Octavius, Nonnius, and Decimus. We never hear of a person named for Latin number 1, 2, 3, or 4, nor for 11 or 12. Why is that?

In 1889, a man and his daughter go to Paris for the Fair. They check into hotel, sign the register, get rooms next door. The daughter unpacks, goes next door to see her father. He says he's tired and will nap. She is fine and will take a walk. She returns at 3-4pm and knocks on his door. No reply. She goes to the desk. Not only no message, but her father is not registered at the hotel. The clerk shows her her signature with other signatures top and bottom, but not her father's. First she wants the manager. He says the room next door is unoccupied.Then she wants the police. An inspector appears. She can describe the wallpaper and furniture in her father's room. The inspector orders the room opened. Everything is different from what she said. Years later, the inspector says that her father was ill of cholera or plague when he checked in. He died soon after. They reconditioned the room to avoid jeopardizing the 1889 Paris Exposition.
