  • Do you like how easy it is to shut them down?

    Say someone expresses an opinion you don't like do you find it too easy to have them silenced? Or to silence you, though it wasn't against community guidelines? How often do you have your opinion deleted because someone didn't like it & not for violating community guidelines? And how often have you had someone else's opinion deleted because you didn't like it?

  • Putting in Pre-Hung doors?

    All the demonstrations on installing pre-hung doors indicate the jam should be in line with the drywall. However, they never mention what to do if the wall is a little out of plumb & lining the jam up with the edge of the drywall would put it at a slight angle. This will cause the door to line up with the edge of the jam on top or bottom, but not both, or have the molding somewhat twisted. How do you handle this?

  • What is causing the scripts hang-up?

    Whether I use Firefox or Windows I get a "not responding" with an error message about a script error. Tried a few things, but nothing has worked. Thanks for your help.

  • Remove drywall before putting up a wall?

    If you are converting a small family room into a den & you want a door at the opening would you have to remove the drywall on the walls & ceiling to nail up the new wall. Or, can you locate the studs & nail through the 1/2" drywall? Also, if the opening is 42", the new door is 32" & the hinged side will have only 3" (back to back 2" x 4"s) will it still need an anchor bolt in the floor? What is the rule on how far apart (how many) anchor bolts are needed? If the short side needs an anchor bolt, do you put this side down then toenail the studs on later?

  • Is sending an email adequate notice of rent increase?

    If it is for a California home & sent more than 35 days before the rent increase would this meet the requirements for adequate notice?

  • How would you install a 9" piece of baseboard on a badly curved wall?

    The gap between the center of the baseboard & the wall is about 1/4 inch. Too much to hide with caulk. Because the base is so short, but tall, bending it into place is also not an option.

    Also, how would you install it around a vent that is too close to the floor for the base to go under & too close to a door on one side, wall on the other to go over?

    What kind of updating ideas/latest trends have you seen that you really like, and/or are going to do to your home? After new paint (hot new color?), carpet, cabinets & appliances, removing old popcorn ceiling what else can be done to make an 80's home look modern & stylish? Thanks for your ideas!

  • What to do about a wall that is covered by large mirrors?

    The wall has about 350 square feet of floor to ceiling mirrors attached to it. The mirrors have been there since 1987 and are beginning to show wear along with giving the place a dated look. How would you solved this problem? Having them removed/replaced with stone is my preferred option, but that much area might be prohibitively expensive for my budget. Any inexpensive alternatives would be greatly appreciated.

  • Why would new plumbing fixture leak?

    I had a new water control valve installed in my upstairs shower. From time-to-time I hear water drip out. It's only a few drops, then stops. I put a bucket under the shower head for an entire day & the total amount was insignificant. Even so, the leaks shouldn't be happening on an all new system, after all, the 25 yo valve that was removed didn't leak, at all. Also, this happens even if it has not been recently used. I don't know where or why the water is coming out. Yes, it is all the way off, & after it was installed the internal washers were cleaned.

  • How long should it take to drill through tile?

    I'm putting in a shower enclosure & drilling the holes into the tile for the mounting screws. I've already gone through one drill bit (drill master), & now working on a Bosch bit. I was told not to apply too much pressure, but finding this incredibly slow going, and any pressure causes the bit to quickly heat way up. As I would like to finish this up this weekend, I can't spend the rest of the day drilling 1 hole. What's wrong here?

  • Under CA Prop. 13 can they raise the value?

    Most of the RE market in California has been in a decline for years. However, my recent property tax bill for 2012 indicates a 2% increase in value. As of the end of 2011 there were only indications of a decline, not an increase. Under CA Prop. 13 can they raise the assessed value, even when there has been no indication of rising values? Have you had an increase for the most recent year & will you do anything about it?

  • What obligations does a landlord have to prospective tenants?

    If after viewing a property a prospective tenant informs the landlord they would be paying from their savings, then fills out an application & pays a credit check fee. Is the landlord (knowing they had no job) now obligated in any way to the prospective tenant, assuming the background/credit check is OK? What if more likeable people, & possibly better candidates (have jobs, but not much in savings) come by right after, but with no better credit? This is under California Real Estate Law.

  • Stair covering with carpet runner, or just wood?

    I like the look of carpet, with wood on the sides of the stairs. The first option, a carpet runner, seems safer than wood stairs as they can be slippery. Best of all, the carpeting will muffle the sounds of foot traffic, possibly add to the over-all look, & be longer lasting. However, I have seen some stairs with the carpet in between the treads/riser, not going over. If I already have carpet on the 2nd floor would this be the better option so the carpet matches? How hard would it be to find a runner that matches or goes well with the other carpet?

  • Do landlords allow people to move in that are not on the lease?

    If someone is renting and allows someone to move in without being added to the lease would that break the lease contract? If the tenant continues to pay the rent as usual, what is the reason for the landlord to require all residents to be on the lease? Would a credit check be needed & what if it is not so good?

  • Help with bifolding doors?

    Since the day I moved into this condo the bifolding doors have never worked properly. One door sags, so it doesn't line up with the other. Also, because of the angle it requires a bit more force to completely close the doors. I have tried adjusting both the top & bottom hinges, even the one on the other side, but nothing seems to work. Does this mean they are just worn out?

  • How do you add 3" to the back splash?

    I want to add about 3" of tile to the side of the back splash, not on top. The existing tile has 1/2" cement board behind it, so I will need to add something similar in size to keep the same line. However, there doesn't appear to be any studs to attach the cement board to behind the drywall in this area. How to secure the board to the wall, & the existing cement board behind the tile.

  • How to align the back splash behind the stove?

    The counters are broken up by the stove/oven. I started the tile back splash up the wall over each area of counter top. I want to continue up behind the stove to the bottom of the wall cabinets, but noticed there is an height difference between the 2 counters. How do I do this?

  • How to make rounded cuts in granite tile?

    I want to make a curved cut in 3/8" granite tile to match the curve of the sink. I saw a demonstration doing something similar with thin, ceramic tile. Will that same tool work with the thicker granite tiles? Also, do you install the sink on the cement board, then tile around it to get it at an even height with the top of the tile?

  • How to determine return of security deposit?

    Landlord offers property with 2 garage doors, neither having an automatic opener. Tenant agrees to rent property. On move in day tenant offers to purchase 2 electric garage door openers, & install them if the landlord will pay for 1. One year later tenants move & landlord inspects property. At that time landlord notices that openers were not installed correctly & 1 garage door spring is broken. Is the landlord entitled to charge tenants for all the cost of correcting all the mistakes made to the installation process? Replace missing bolts, tightening the chains, lowering the motor position, & reprogramming the remotes so both doors don't open with each click. Also, the garage door spring is of unknown age, would it be fair to charge the tenants for the cost of replacement, split the fee, or no charge?
