Should I buy the house?
My wife and I have started looking for our first home (this is our first week). We have a limited budget and in our price range most of what we have found is.... unappealing (borderline revolting in many cases).
We have found 1 place we like, it's at the upper end of our budget, and about a 20min commute for us to work. We have two months before we MUST move... Should we buy this one, or wait and hope for something better?
3 AntwortenRenting & Real Estatevor 1 JahrzehntWhat do you think about the "Fence" issue?
I'm looking for solutions. I definatly want to see the flow of illegal immagrants stopped, and was initially behind a fence to help with this. During my research I found 2 very real problems with it. 1) Thousands of farmers depend on irrigation for crops along the Rio Grande (This river shifts and changes constantly and a fence would make their efforts immpossible) 2) The animal life in the area also depends on the Rio Grande (remember this is a very arid area).
Any ideas... I'd still support a fence if we can come up with something.

I'd like to work toward a career in journalism... I've been told that a degree in journalism isn't the best way to persue this field, but what is?
What "specialty" is in demand? With the decline in print media, is broadcast media a more viable option?

A friend of mine immigrated from Ethiopia 3 years ago. He has recently become engaged and would like his parents to attend. Niether he nor his parents have any intention of their staying for anything more than a visit, but he is under the impretion that for them to come they need a sponsored VISA. Could this be right? There must be some way for them to come as tourists... or am I way off base?
3 AntwortenPacking & Preparationvor 1 JahrzehntI need your stories!?
I'm collecting stories, life experiences, and memories.
Stupid things you did as a kid, the things that have made you laugh till you cried, recipies gone horribly wrong, the time your husband tried to be nice and destroyed all of your clothes doing laundry, The story that starts... "we were so drunk and". Anything that stands out in your memory.
Here is an example... When we were about nine or ten, my best friend and I built a wooden sled. It was about 3ft long and 1.5ft wide, complete with 2x4's for runners. In our juvinille brilliance we decided to pull this along gravel roads with one another driving the tractor at about 30-35mph. It got really exciting when we decided the best way to ride was to surf! I was left with a few scars and one of the best memories of my childhood.

9 AntwortenOther - Society & Culturevor 1 JahrzehntThe philanthropic man/saint?
I'd like you to imagine a man who wants nothing more from life than to be a good man. A man who devotes his life to works of good, helping humanity, and inspiring good in others. He is very successful in this pursuit. His existance is responsible for saving 100,000 lives and the improvement of millions more.....
Now imagine he is an athiest.... The obvious question I won't ask is does he go to heaven or hell. The one I want to consider is whether or not he is a saint? Would any church recognize him as such? Is saint a term reserved for people of faith? A slight variation, say this man is a Baptist.... Would the catholic church ever recognize his actions as deserving of sainthood?

5 AntwortenOther - Society & Culturevor 1 JahrzehntWhere do I fit in religion?
I have at times considered myself an athiest... I don't believe that's correct I am open to the idea of God, but still wrestle with it. The heaven/hell dicotomy gives me particular trouble.
If God is omnipotent he knows the outcome of all things. He knows which of his "children" will make decisions that will (if you believe in the bible) end in descent into hell. Now I know with my own children I would do almost anything to protect them, so I chose a different view of God.
If God is omnipotent, then perhaps this isn't a do or die scenario, maybe this is a learning opportunity. God could forgive all of us.
I also don't believe in Jesus Christ as diety born of immaculate conception. He was a great man who began a revolt against many inequities he saw, but he was a man.
I don't believe in the bible. Old or New testament.
So where do I fall in the spectram?
13 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 1 JahrzehntGOD works in mysterious ways?
Let me preface, yes I'm an athiest, but I ask this only for new perspectives and information.....
1st- No we can not prove man evolved from ape.
2nd- Yes we can prove evolution has happened and continues to happen in many species.
So why when "God acts in mysterious ways" is a near maxim for christians, do so many christians oppose teaching evolution....?
Would the logical conclusion, from a religious prespective be that God created evolution?
18 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 1 JahrzehntHave you been on a cruise?
My wife and I have "batted" about the idea of taking a cruise. Neither of us have done so before, and we don't know what to expect.
If you've been, how did you enjoy the experience, +/- vs. a traditional vacation, what are some good destinations?
13 AntwortenCruise Travelvor 1 JahrzehntWhat is the best book I've never read?
I'm a ravenous reader. Non-fiction, fiction of nearly every genre (I don't read romance). I've gone through the "classics", loved some hated others. (I'll still never understand fans of Catcher in the Rye!)
I need some new material, so if you please.... What are your favorites?

My wife and I would like to take our first vacation together. Our funds aren't unlimited, but we'd like to get out of the country. We'd like to keep it under $2000 travel and lodging expences.
