Regarding the Twin Paradox in special relativity, I understand that there is no symmetry because the observer on the space ship accelerates, breaking the symmetry. But every example I see involves the space ship turning around. I know that this is a type of acceleration but why do I never see examples where the space ship just travels in a straight line and stops?
2 AntwortenPhysicsvor 1 JahrzehntFellow atheists. Here's some interesting thoughts...?
I myself am an atheist but it's fun to ponder some of the various philosophical problems with religion. Consider the following.
If there was anybody who went through life never hearing about god, it would be immoral for him to punish them. Some say that they are the exception to the rule and go to heaven anyways.
But if that's true then...
That means preaching the word of god would be a sin because learning about god opens up the possibility for that person to reject god. So it's kind of like the game. The purpose of which is to not think about it.
btw you just lost the game.

6 AntwortenCamcordersvor 1 JahrzehntFellow atheists: here is a tough question?
As an atheist myself, I do not believe in the existence of god and strongly advocate the scientific method. Every theory must go through the meat grinder of scientific inquiry. And even when a theory is proven beyond a reasonable doubt, it should be subject to research and any necessary changes over time.
But I don't need to tell you any of this; I only say this as a disclaimer as to not mislead anyone into thinking that I'm not truly an atheist. But for the hell of it, I thought I'd ask a tough question just to see what you'd have to say.
My question is this: of all ideas ever to come out of religion (any religion), which idea is the least absurd to you. I'm interested to see what you have to say.

1 AntwortPhysicsvor 1 JahrzehntHow are graviton particles and general relativity compatible?
String theory, as many of you may know, is the attempt to bridge the gap between relativity and quantum mechanics (which I am pretty familiar with). So far, I'm having an easy time with string theory, except with one thing. And that is, how are graviton particles compatible with general relativity?
String theory postulates that gravity is the result of graviton particles carrying a force. But general relativity says that gravity isn't a force at all but rather the warping of space and time. Is there something I'm missing?

21 AntwortenReligion & Spiritualityvor 1 JahrzehntFrom an Atheist to Christians?
I know this isn't much of a question but I just want to let you know that I respect you and your beliefs. Even though I do not share your views over creation and the meaning of life and whatnot, I know that many of you sincerely wish the best for me based on what you know is the truth.
It is very easy for many of us on both sides to lose our patience with each other. I myself have had a hot temper on occasion, as most of us do. Us atheists believe in free thinking and the ability to question the truth. That is a good ideal. Christians believe in faith and the ability to trust one another and have hope for something better. That is also a good ideal.
Unfortunately these two ideals often clash with each other and we clash along with them. I am still an atheist and will most likely remain that way. You are still a christian wand will also most likely remain that way. So be it.
But we must remember to be more kind to one another. Neither of us should force our beliefs onto each other. That is ignorant. Instead, we must agree to disagree. That is what the world lacks and it is in our hands to try and change that. I don't mean to give a big speech about this but I just thought it is important to remember these things more often. That's all I have to say.
