Credit crisis explanation (by Ben Stein)

The crisis occurred (to greatly oversimplify) because the financial system allowed entities to place bets on whether or not those mortgages would ever be paid. You didn't have to own a mortgage to make the bets. These bets, called Credit Default Swaps, are complex. But in a nutshell, they allow someone to profit immensely - staggeringly - if large numbers of subprime mortgages are not paid off and go into default.

The profit can be wildly out of proportion to the real amount of defaults, because speculators can push down the price of instruments tied to the subprime mortgages far beyond what the real rates of loss have been. As I said, the profits here can be beyond imagining. (In fact, they can be so large that one might well wonder if the whole subprime fiasco was not set up just to allow speculators to profit wildly on its collapse...)

These Credit Default Swaps have been written (as insurance is written) as private contracts. There is nil government regulation of them. Who writes these policies? Banks. Investment banks. Insurance companies. They now owe the buyers of these Credit Default Swaps on junk mortgage debt trillions of dollars. It is this liability that is the bottomless pit of liability for the financial institutions of America.

Because these giant financial companies never dreamed that the subprime mortgage securities could fall as far as they did, they did not enter a potential liability for these CDS policies anywhere near their true liability - which again, is virtually bottomless. They do not have a countervailing asset to pay off the liability.

This should never have happened. Now that it did happen, should the taxpayer pay to make the billionaire speculators whole on their bets? What the heck is to be done?

My television is a little more than 4 years old. I've just moved it and now the picture isn't aligned. If words are on the screen, it's like the letters are split between a greenish color and a bluish color and not aligned. Like for an 'A', you're seeing a double 'A' - almost next to each other, but still overlapping.

What would typically cause this and how do I adjust the picture so that it's back to being aligned?

My home barely appraises for what is owed on it, but the homes in my area are are selling for much less than that. I have just been left w/the mortgage, and quite a bit of add'l debt after a divorce. I don't want to go the same route as my ex and just give up and let my credit take a hit.

Please give me some advice as to how to get out from under my mortgage w/out having to be forclosed on or file bankruptcy.

for the past 7 days, the ball of my right foot hurts so bad it's a real chore to walk on it. It doesn't hurt when there's no pressure on it - only when I try walking. I didn't have any accidents, I just woke up and it was hurting. Are there any exercises that could get this worked out to quit hurting? Any suggestions on what could have caused this? I would just like to try something at-home as I'm in a little of a financial bind and don't need to add a Dr. bill on top of it.

I received a dog bite on the leg a couple of weeks ago. It came close, but didn't break the skin. I can still feel a welt and was just wondering what has caused this and if there's anything I can do about it (short of going to the doctor's office).

I went to a workout class (at 24Hour) last night for the first time in almost 2 years. I'm not sure what it was called, but it was an hour long and we did a lot of cardio with a step, squats with a bar and weights, and misc upperbody routines w/handweights. I expected to feel sore, but I didn't expect heartburn. What would cause that in this situation? I've been eating a lot of raw vegetables (broccoli and cauliflower) as well as a raw egg in the mornings (for the past week). Have had very little 'bad' food. The heartburn is greatly minimized today - almost gone, but is there something I can do to prevent it next time or treat it if it comes on again after/during a workout session?

I'm trying to incorporate raw eggs into my diet (don't worry, I've fully researched this and am comfortable and confident with what I am doing). Anyway, does anyone know the best way to down these things w/out gagging? I believe it's all in my head, but I can't seem to do this w/out my gag reflex acting up. In a way, it's comical, but after 4 days, it's starting to get old.

Is it best to not take any of them while on the fast? Or can I continue with them? I don't take anything doctor ordered - just a bunch of natural herbs/supplements. I've found quite a bit of fasting information, but nothing that really addresses herbal and vitamin supplements.

I am now in my 30's and I don't understand why I cannot have clear skin! Since my early teens when I started having 'bad' skin, I've tried so many different cleansing rituals, but none seem to work. I've been on Proactiv, Estee Lauder, Mary Kay, as well as many store brand cleansers. I go through a ritual every morning and evening of washing, toning/astringent, lotion repair. I'll have moments of clear(ish) skin, but it doesn't last long.

What do I need to follow or do in order to keep my skin clear of blemishes that make me look like I'm still in high school?!?

What is the best way to find out what colors go best with my skin tone? I've noticed how some make me look washed out and others don't, but is there a way to find out the best colors for a particular tone other than by trial and error?

I have a '99 Dodge Ram 1500 that the taillights won't turn off. I just noticed this when I arrived at work this morning. Is there some way I can get them to turn off while I wait to get in to get the actual problem fixed?

This is in continuation to a question I posted earlier today.....

In trying to remove the shut-off valve (that is for a dishwasher hookup) from the main hot water line under the kitchen sink, it just turns and turns and turns in the same spot w/out showing any threading.

How to I get this removed so that I can either replace it or put a stopper on it so it will quit leaking?
