  • Are we living in a rape culture? Why is rape so common?

Is it because women are still seen as objects?

I have heard all this horrible stories how women constantly needed to fear rape in history. In war, men and male children were killed, women were forced to watch all of this and then go with the enemy to live a life as a sex slave, being raped for their entire life (just look at the disgusting quote of Agamemnon).

Women were treated like property. Once you married them, they had nothing to say and you could do with them whatever you wanted and they had no right to say no.

I could imagine that these type of attitudes (women are property, sex slaves, objects) were the cause for all that rape, but now I heard that EVEN TODAY, western soldiers still seem to rape women in the countries they are fighting in. Or even their female „coworkers“. But WHY?

I thought we in the West are all developed societies that see women and men as EQUAL. How come such a behavior still happens? I don’t get it. Societies like (for example) the cherokee tribe were able to respect women already LONG time ago. Rape was a rare crime unlike today.

Do we still live in a rape culture? And how do we change it?

PS: I want to mention that men can be rape victims of women too and they are as much traumatized as raped women. But no matter if their predator is female or male. I think that there is a different attitude behind rapes of male. It’s as important but I guess we need to address it in a different way (Sry for my english, it’s my third language).
