  • In fund management, are customers' accounts an asset?

In fund management, are customers' accounts under management (accounts are placed in various banks and the customers retain all ownership rights whereas the fund management company only has administrative rights) an asset to the fund management firm?

  • Constant prices and interest rates?

    Hi guys,

I'm having trouble with an investment problem.

A guy makes deposits to a pension plan every year. He is allowed to deposit $10,000 in constant prices per year (year zero as index), and he does so every year for 11 years. Inflation is 3%.

IE. Year; Constant prices; Current prices

    0; 0; 0

    1; $10,000; $10,300

    2; $10,000; $10,609

    ...

    11; $10,000; $13,842.34

However, the accumulated deposits yields interests, 3%.

I'm to calculate the total deposit (plus interest rates) to the pension plan by the end of the 11th year in both current and constant prices.

When calculating the interest rates every year (in excel) does it make sense to make the calculation for both constant and current prices? Should I calculate interest rates for the current prices and then deflate them by the inflation rate? Or can I just add interest rates "the old way" both with current and constant prices?

    Any help appreciated.

I wish to work for a senator with whom I share a strict constitutional ideology and a deep-felt love for America - only, I'm not an American nor living in the States.

Is it possible for me to do so? Who should I contact? Will they even consider a foreigner?

  • Is Obama Europe-izing America?

As a European citizen, I, along with many others, felt concerned with Obama entering office, that he was nothing but a social democrat; a socialist, trying to turn America into another Europe.

These concerns are materializing, it seems, now that Obama has signed the Equal pay bill and with the upcoming ministry of culture.

I'm really disgusted by this social democratism - what created a hideous welfare state where I live is now sitting as the president of the last free nation on earth - that is, if not Obama takes freedom away in favor of a welfare state like that of Scandinavia.

I don't think what he is doing is constitutional. I've never in my life felt that a president should be impeached - yet Obama is already calling for such opinions in me.

It's a sad time to live... America loosing it's freedom to a socialist. I've felt like crying multiple times since I was told.

God bless America! God bless freedom from government!

BTW. Social democratism has nothing to do with what Democrats usually practises. Real democrats at least prefers small government.

  • If Obama is against the Bush...?

"my way or the highway" mentality, as he puts it, why, then, is he himself denouncing everyone who think otherwise than him on issues like the economy, climate and others of the "failed policies of the past"?

If more people believes that global warming is due to planetary trends, does Obama then represent the American people with his very restrictive views on energy? Are other matter like energy independence more important to the American people?

  • Why do you/don't you drive an American vehicle?

I often hear arguments about quality and gas mileage. All of the myths regarding these two, I think, has been long disproved by various auto-magazines.

When, then, won't Americans buy American cars when, according to the professionals, they're as good as the competition?

  • Obama a bigot when rejecting bigotry?

    Obama said before boarding the train, yesterday;

"An economy that is faltering. Two wars: one that needs to be ended responsibly, one that needs to be waged wisely. A planet that is warming from our unsustainable dependence on oil."

"What is required is a new declaration of independence, not just in our nation but in our own lives -- from ideology and small thinking, prejudice and bigotry -- an appeal not to our easy instincts but to our 'better angels,'"

Now, I'm by no means an Obama hater - I think he is a very fine candidate. But I can't help to think that the above quote is the same as Obama calling dissenters bigots. If you support the wars or don't believe human-caused global warming, you're a "bigot". I hope these are distortions of his words, because I wouldn't want him to say such. I just fear they're not.

  • Are the Danes wrong on socialism?

We always hear how the scandinavian model is one of the best working systems out there. Yet, Danes, in increasing numbers, are turning away from this system, in favor of the American model of private initiatives.

Is it on time to recognize, that the scandinavian model is not as perfect as people like Michael Moore like us to think?

Why is it, that I have to use libraries from external programmers - why can't I code it myself with C++ - do I need anything specific to do this (IE C), or can it be done entirely through C++?

In spite of liberals attacking conservatives and vice versa, economic crisis and whatnot, let's gather--if not in real life, then at least in this 'question'--to show our love for America.

I love America - how about you? Let's put down the 'weapons' (rhetoric ones, that is), and start appreciating the good things about being Americans, in the land of the free, home of the brave.

Please, I don't wish for this question to be a forum for stupid right or left wing smears - I want honest opinions.

Did the founding fathers intend this country to be heavily taxed?

Might the founding fathers intend this country to be equal for all, with low taxes for all, or did they like the idea of redistribution?

  • What is meant by z' = |z|?

I'm about to read a book involving some mathematics, and I'm trying to learn the various concepts as I go along. I stumbled upon this, though, and I cannot figure out what is meant by it:

    "Let z' = |z|, the absolute value of z."

The talk is on (I think) polynomial functions and determining the area under the curve, that corresponds to a particular z value.

  • Do you have VERY bad periods, too?

I just started playing golf a couple of weeks ago (after a break of several years - I couldn't remember a thing from then). In the start I did poorly, as any other golfer when new. Then, after practising hard and long, I began getting some great iron shots in - they were straight, long and consistent. I did that for about a week. Then, suddenly, I couldn't hit a thing. Just here today, I was at the driving range; I was awful. I was hitting most of them wrong, only getting 5 or so okay shots in - I had no shots as good as I did just 3 days ago.

What could this be due to? Maybe I've worked too hard?! I can feel that my arms are a little bit tired, but not as much as when I just started out. Could it be my 'mental state' - going into it feeling negatively about my game, because I did poorly last time I was out on the driving range?

    Any advice appreciated.

  • Big business and regulation?

Please, I don't wish for flame-wars, I only wish for heart-felt responses from people who believe in what they say. I respect your opinion, I hope you'll respect mine in return. Let's keep it nice, clean and respectful.

The subject of my question is both big business and regulation. I grew up in Denmark - one of the countries in the EU where government is largest. I grew up always admiring the US, because in the US you could succeed without government regulating you or taking away your money - in the US I could help poor people or disabled people because I wanted to - not because the government took away my money and spent it like it wanted.

Is saddens me, though, that many in today's America - on both sides - are so much against not regulating. We want to tax big business, tax the wealthy, tax the successful ones. Slowly America is turning into the Denmark that I wanted to leave because of just that.

I don't get it, nevertheless - why tax big business when it supplies you with goods and services you want and sometimes need? Goods and services in Denmark has always been very expensive, because of this exactly - the companies are passing along the bill to the costumers. Big business wouldn't be big, if it didn't do a good job in what it does; supplying us with what we want and need.

Americans are for freedom, I'm positive to that fact - but why do some of you want to limit some's freedoms, although they are entitled to their own wealth? I'm sure you have good, heartfelt reasons to this, and I'll really like to know them - because to me, they seem to be the opposite of what America stands for; I'm sure you disagree, why I want to hear your arguments. Otherwise, I'll never understand you.

I guess these basically are my questions: What did big business ever do to you, and why do you want to regulate people's and businesses' behaviours? I would appreciate it, though, if you tried to answer my question as a whole (if possible).
