  • Inheritance Tax UK and insurance policies?

I'm assisting in the settlement of an estate, without the use of solicitors. A will was not left and the only assets were a joint bank account and 2 insurance policies.

The bank account has been transferred into the name of the joint account holder and - we've checked - is not applicable for inheritance tax.

Are life insurance / death benefit policies applicable for inheritance tax?

If so, we would have to declare these on inheritance tax forms - would we also therefore need to disclose information about the bank account too? Or if the value of the bank account and the 2 insurance policies added together is less than the £325,000 inheritance tax threshold, would we need to bother with the inheritance tax forms at all!?

I gather that going down the road of inheritance tax forms will also necessitate the need for a Letter of Administration in lieu of the Grant of Probate due to the lack of a will. Very confusing! Would appreciate any answers to some or all of these questions.

    Many thanks

  • vodka jelly - consumable after 6 years?

Hello I've found some individually sealed vodka jellies which were manufactured in 2008. Would they be ok to drink or would they even have an alcohol content after all this time?

    Thanks

  • Vet Nurse Salary and Progression in the UK?

I'm looking into becoming a Vet Nurse and have found that the starting salary tends to be from £15,000 to £18,000. Would any qualified Vet Nurses reading this be able to tell me if that's a fair average? Also, are there many opportunities to progress further (if so, please expand) and how likely is it to earn more money in the future, whilst still remaining within the Veterinary field?

Thanks for your time and any advice

  • Travelling and/or moving with my dog....where to go?

A lot has gone wrong for me lately - my partner of nearly 5 years dumped me with little explanation. I can't go home and live with my family for numerous reasons so I need to find a new place to live with my dog.

I want to live in North London / Hertfordshire because of work but it's very expensive and I would probably have to rent a room in a house share - but the dog really needs the run of the house and, preferably, a garden.

I've got some money, not millions but enough for a trip around the world, but where could I go and bring my dog, without him having to be quarantined etc? I can either quit my job or take a sabbatical for a longer trip.

Any general advice would be appreciated, but particularly advice regarding places I can bring my dog - both in terms of long-term accomodation and holiday destinations

    Thanks

  • Whats the best Scottish city to live in?

I'm looking into relocating to Scotland and just wondered what the general opinion is regarding the best city in Scotland in terms of job availability, crime, overcrowding and general quality of life - or anything else you think worth mentioning.

Moving from London so ideally want somewhere with a bit of life but not the crime and congestion of London!

  • my boyfriend wants kids...i don't - should we split now?

my boyfriend of 4 years has decided that he wants to have children in the next 3 - 5 years. i have always been adamant that i do not want to have children of my own, for various good reasons, although i might consider adoption when im older (im 22 now).

we've realised that we both want different things from life so, should we split now and just get it over and done with, even though we both still love each other and don't want to split up!?

  • Vandalised car - will it pass the MOT?

    Hi

My car is going for an MOT on Friday (although the MOT doesn't expire until 27/01/10). Some f****r decided to smash the wing mirrors off the car the other night. Luckily they weren't very good at it and so although the mirror glass was smashed, the outer casing is pretty much intact, although not attached to the car!! I have duct taped the mirror casing back on and have fitted new glass, so I do have two functioning mirrors, although they look really sh!t

Do you think it will pass the MOT or do I have to get it repaired first (much to my annoyance!!) ?

    Thanks

  • Credit Card Suggestions - What one to pick?

Hi I need to get a credit card soon as I'm going to be hiring a car and they need a credit card to secure the rental. I currently use a Debit card. I don't really know much about credit cards so I would be grateful if someone could suggest what type of card to get.

I'm literally just going to use it for the car hire and nothing else but I want to be sure I don't pick one with any hidden charges etc. I live in England and will be hiring a car in Ireland or Northern Ireland.

    Thanks

  • Suggestion for dress for 21st birthday party?

I'm going to be 21 in a few weeks and we're having a big party in a decent pub / restaurant to celebrate.

I want to get a dress thats a bit special but I'm having problems finding something suitable. I'm about 5 feet tall and a UK size 14/16 so something too skimpy won't look any good!

Any suggestions of shops or a particular dress would be much appreciated.

  • Suggestions for a "new" car?

    I'm going to be 21 soon and will be upgrading my car as a result. I've been looking on autotrader, parkers.co.uk and cargiant.com for a car to buy but nothing has really won me over. I would just like some suggestions about what would be a good car to get, based on the following criteria;

    1. I want to spend about £5000 - not including insurance, etc.

    2. The car should have at least a 1.4 engine. Preferably a hot-hatch type car, small but quite fast.

    3. I'm female (if that matters!?!) and yes, I can drive - very well.

    4. I want something that isn't going to cost a fortune to fill up with petrol, to fix, get parts for or tax - so that writes off most Mercedes and BMWs! :(

    5. The car should preferably be automatic.

    6. The car is for commuting, social and posing purposes only! I don't need extra space for kids or a dog etc.

Any suggestions or ideas would be grately appreciated!

  • Courtesy car has a puncture - please help?

I have been given a Mercedes by Drive Assist whilst my car is being repaired following an accident.

One of the wheels has a slow puncture and the wheel is now nearly completely flat and the car is undriveable. I noticed that the tyre was going flat about 2 hours after I took delivery of the car but I just topped up the air in it and it seemed fine. Now, five days on, the wheel is nearly completely flat so obviously it has a bad puncture.

What should I do - should I tell Drive Assist or will they try to pin the damage on me and make me pay loads of money for a new tyre?

Should I get the tyre fixed at my own expense (even though I didn't cause the initial accident)

or are there any other suggestions?

    Thanks
